Mount Buller in December, before the summer crowds
The Mt Buller Sky Run on Sunday 6 December starts in the village square and goes up. The 5km climbs to the summit and back. The 22km runs out to Mount Sterling and returns through snow gum forest. The 36km drops to Mirimbah and comes back up the Klingsporn Bridle Track, a long climb to finish on.
The 45km is the classic Victorian Alps circuit: over Mount Sterling and past Craig's Hut, the cattlemen's hut built for The Man from Snowy River. Every distance starts at 8am, and early December is usually after the snow and before the worst of the heat.
If you'd rather stay on the coast, the Ocean Grove Running Festival on Sunday 22 November starts and finishes at the Ocean Grove Hotel on the Bellarine Peninsula: a mostly flat half at 7:40am, 10km at 8am and 5km at 8:15am, with a kids' race later in the morning.
The night before Buller, on Saturday 5 December, the Afterglow Twilight Trail runs the Surf Coast Walk into Torquay. The 21km starts at 6:45pm and finishes on Fisherman's Beach in the dark; the 13km and 5km go after 8pm. It's trail, sand and a few short bitumen stretches, with the course lit by glow sticks.
If you'd like a marathon with a country feel, the Hallora Marathon Festival on Sunday 6 December runs the Two Towns Trail between Drouin and Warragul. The marathon and 24km start at 7am, there are runs and walks down to 5km, and the day raises money for Peter Mac.
And for after Christmas, Rip to River on Monday 28 December is 10km on the sand from the Rip at Point Lonsdale to Ocean Grove's main beach, crossing the Barwon River mouth on the way.
