The marathon at Beerwah starts at 4am, and that's the best thing about it
Beerwah at Daybreak on Sunday 6 December starts its marathon at 4am at the base of Mount Beerwah in the Glass House Mountains, with the half at 6am and the 10km at 7am. In a Sunshine Coast December that isn't a gimmick. It's the only sensible way to run 42km of trail there without finishing in the heat of the day.
It's a real trail course: 294m of climbing in the 10km, 880m in the half, and 1,172m in the marathon, which runs the half loop twice. Marathon runners carry a headlamp, a 500ml hydration pack and a compression bandage. Entry is $95 for the 10km, $125 for the half and $145 for the marathon.
If you've never run in the Glass House Mountains, the 10km is the right introduction: still a proper climb, done before breakfast, with the peaks around you as the sun comes up. The marathon is for people who already know they like running in the dark.
If Beerwah is too far a jump, the Trail Run Australia Sunshine Coast 24hr is the week before, on Saturday 28 November, at Ewen Maddock Dam in Landsborough, just down the road. It's a 5km loop, mostly forest singletrack, and you choose how long to keep going: 5 hours, 10 hours or the full 24 from noon. There's a 5km fun run as well.
On the Gold Coast, the RECC Run the World Relay on Friday 4 December is four runners doing 5km each round Broadwater Parklands at Southport from 5:30pm: flat, paved, and over by dinner. And the NYE Resolution Run at Carrara on 31 December runs from a 1.25km junior dash up to 13km round Emerald Lakes, which is as good a way to finish 2026 as any.
