A Bunbury ultra that gets longer every hour
The most unusual race in Western Australia this month is in Bunbury on Saturday 21 November. The 7-7 Run For Ahlia starts at 7am with a 5km lap. Every hour after that the lap gets 500 metres longer, so the twelfth and last one is 11km and the day adds up to 104km.
It's a fundraiser in honour of Ahlia Williams, run from the Bunbury Runners Club on streets, park paths and a little trail. The format is the point: every lap starts on the hour, whatever you did in the last one, so you can't bank time early. It's built for experienced ultra runners, and there's a shorter Ahlia's Hour for everyone else.
Closer to Perth, summer racing moves to the river and starts early. Masters Athletics WA's Canning Caper on Sunday 13 December leaves Riverton Bridge at 7am: 6km or 10km on a flat road along the Canning River's north bank. It's about as close to a fast course as Perth offers in December.
On the same morning, the Founders City Beach Christmas Run is 4km or 8km along the City Beach promenade at 7am, with a Christmas breakfast at the kiosk afterwards and prizes for the best costume. Entry is $25.
The one I'd circle for the end of the year is the 6 Inch Trail Marathon on Sunday 20 December. It runs one way along the Munda Biddi Trail from Goldmine Hill near North Dandalup to Dwellingup: about 46km with roughly 925m of climbing, or a 23km half. Aid stations are at 23km and 36km. The marathon starts at 4:30am and the half at 6:30am, and in a Darling Range December you'll be glad of both.
And if there are kids in the house, the 5K Foam Fest is at the State Equestrian Centre in Brigadoon on Saturday 9 January: 25 foam and mud obstacles over 5km, from $74.99. Walk it, run it, or go round the obstacles. Nobody's timing you.
