Bruny Island's ultra finishes at the lighthouse
The Bruny Island Ultra on Saturday 28 November starts at Dennes Point, the northern tip of the island, at 4am and runs 64km of sealed and dirt road south to the Cape Bruny Lighthouse. The marathon starts at 8:30am and finishes at the hotel in Alonnah, looking over the D'Entrecasteaux Channel.
It's also a relay for teams of up to ten, with changeovers every 2km, which makes it one of the few ultras you can do with friends who don't run ultras. You get there on the ferry from Kettering, so plan on staying the night.
If one day isn't enough, the Run Tasmania Stage Race starts on Wednesday 25 November: four days from Kingston Beach to Sandy Bay over Mount Nelson, then to the summit of kunanyi/Mount Wellington, the Tasman Coastal Trail, and a finish at Cape Raoul. There's a long course and a short one, entry is $1,438 for all four stages, and you can enter single stages too.
The same Saturday as Bruny, The Rugged Race at Redbanks in Nugent is a 6km mud and obstacle course on a farm, with a 3.5km junior wave for kids aged 8 and up running with an adult. There are showers at the finish, which tells you most of what you need to know.
Then the Cadbury Marathon on Sunday 3 January starts at the chocolate factory in Claremont and stays on flat, quiet roads, with a half, 10km, 5km and 1km as well. It's one of very few marathons in the country that week, and a good way to start a year.
