Canberra's best December race is free
Canberra Runners' Christmas Relays on Tuesday 1 December is twelve 1km laps of Weston Park in Yarralumla at 6:15pm, for teams of two to twelve. It's free.
The loop is dirt trail and grass with a few gentle rises, the baton changes at a central hub every lap, and with a full team nobody runs more than a kilometre at a time. It suits a running group, an office team, or a family with kids old enough for a kilometre.
If you'd rather run on your own, Canberra Runners' Spring Series has a race on Barrenjoey Drive on Tuesday 24 November, with 2km and 5km options.
For something much longer, the Hybrid 24 Hour Backyard Ultra at Stromlo Forest Park is on Saturday 5 December. It's the backyard format: one loop every hour, on the hour, and you keep going until you can't make the next start or the 24 hours run out. Come to run, or come to crew for someone and watch how strange it gets around hour 18.
And if you want a race where the finish is close whatever your pace, ACT Masters Athletics runs a handicap at Molonglo Reach on Sunday 29 November: 3km or 6km at 8:30am on the paths by the river, open to walkers. In a handicap the slower runners start first, so in theory everyone finishes together.
