Course Description

The race starts beside the Freshwater Pony Club, just opposite the railway station, and follows two scenic loops on a working cane farm. The 6km and 9km routes wind through tall sugarcane, cross shallow creek beds and skirt the lush banks of Freshwater Creek, offering occasional slushy sections after recent rains. The marathon combines both loops for a challenging but rewarding distance. Expect a mix of firm dirt, soft sand, and gentle undulations, with plenty of shade from the canopy and occasional wildlife sightings. Trail shoes are recommended, and water stations are positioned at each kilometre.

Getting There

From Cairns CBD, drive south on the Captain Cook Highway (A1) for ~15 km, then turn left onto Kamerunga Road. The venue is at 1 Kamerunga Rd, Freshwater – parking is free in the station carpark (limited spaces). Alternatively, take the Cairns‑Kuranda train to Freshwater station; the start line is a short walk from the platform. Arrive at least 30 minutes early to collect your bib and stretch.

Weather & What to Pack

November is spring in north Queensland, bringing warm temperatures (22‑30 °C) and high humidity. Expect occasional showers as the wet season begins, so the course may be damp or slushy. Wear breathable, moisture‑wicking clothing, a light waterproof jacket, and a hat for sun protection. Carry plenty of water and consider electrolyte supplements to stay hydrated.
