About This Event
Southern Grampians Endurance Challenge where teams battle the terrain and elements over two days hiking, running or scrambling the approximately 80km course. Team challenge started in 2010 as fundraising event for Dunkeld Community Centre. Course changes yearly to maximise breathtaking scenery.
Course Description
The Serra Terror takes teams through approximately 80km of the stunning Grampians National Park over two days during the King's Birthday long weekend. The course changes yearly to maximise breathtaking scenery and ensure fresh challenges for returning participants. Expect a demanding mix of single track trails, four-wheel drive tracks, steep hill climbs, and flatter sections as you hike, run, or scramble through some of Victoria's most spectacular mountain terrain. Teams can tackle the full distance as an Endurance Team (3-8 members completing the entire course together) or as a Relay Team (3-8 members interchanging at checkpoints). This is an epic adventure that tests endurance, teamwork, and mental fortitude against the elements.
Quick Facts
Getting There
Dunkeld is located in western Victoria, approximately 3 hours drive from Melbourne via the Western Highway. The small township serves as the base for the event, with the course winding through the surrounding Grampians National Park. Parking is available in Dunkeld township. Arrive the day before to check in, attend the event briefing, and prepare gear. Support crews will need vehicles capable of accessing checkpoint locations throughout the National Park.
Weather & What to Pack
Early June in the Grampians brings cool to cold winter conditions. Daytime temperatures typically range from 8-14°C, dropping to 2-6°C overnight, with potential for near-freezing conditions at higher elevations. Rain, wind, and even snow are possible on the exposed ridges and peaks. Participants should prepare for rapidly changing mountain weather with layered clothing, waterproof gear, and warm insulation. Hydration remains important despite cooler temperatures. The challenging conditions are part of what makes this event legendary.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between Endurance and Relay teams?
Endurance Teams (3-8 members) complete the entire 80km course together with a minimum of 3 people on the track at any time. Relay Teams (3-8 members) can interchange at designated checkpoints, allowing members to rest while others continue. Both formats require teamwork and strategic planning.
When do registrations open for 2026?
Registrations open February 1, 2026. Early bird pricing of $275 per person is available until March 31, increasing to $300 from April 1. Youth participants (under 18) can register for $175. Email serraterrorhike@gmail.com for questions.
What experience level is required?
This is an advanced endurance event requiring significant trail running/hiking experience, navigation skills, and high fitness levels. Previous experience with multi-day events and mountain terrain is strongly recommended. Review the training guide and preparation checklist on the official website before committing.
What gear and support do I need?
Teams must be self-sufficient between checkpoints with mandatory safety gear including navigation equipment, first aid, emergency shelter, food, and water. Support crews are essential - they meet teams at checkpoints to provide supplies, nutrition, and gear changes. Check the official packing list and event rules for complete requirements.
Where do participants stay during the event?
Teams and support crews typically camp in Dunkeld or book accommodation in the township. The event spans two days (June 6-7), so overnight arrangements are essential. Book early as accommodation fills quickly. Check the official website's accommodation page for recommendations and camping options.
