Quick Facts
Getting There
Forrest is located approximately 160km southwest of Melbourne and 30km from Colac. Take the Princes Highway to Colac, then follow the Colac-Forrest Road south into the Otway Ranges. The Barwon Water Reserve is on Hennigan Crescent in the township. Street parking is available near the reserve, though spaces may be limited on race day. Arrive at least 45 minutes before your start time to allow for parking, registration, and warm-up. Public transport options are limited in this rural location, so carpooling is recommended.
Weather & What to Pack
Early June in the Otway Ranges typically brings cool to cold conditions with temperatures ranging from 6-14°C. Morning starts can be particularly chilly, often around 5-8°C, with the possibility of frost. Rain is common in this region during winter months, so be prepared for wet, slippery trail conditions. The dense forest canopy provides some shelter but also reduces sunlight. Dress in layers with moisture-wicking base layers, and bring a waterproof jacket. Trail shoes with good grip are essential. Despite the cold, you'll warm up quickly on the climbs, so avoid overdressing.
Frequently Asked Questions
What type of trail running experience do I need?
The 6km is suitable for those new to trail running with basic fitness. The 10km requires moderate trail experience, whilst the half marathon is recommended for experienced trail runners comfortable with technical terrain, hills, and extended time on feet in variable conditions.
What should I wear and bring on race day?
Wear trail running shoes with good grip as tracks may be muddy or slippery. Dress in layers suitable for cold conditions (6-14°C). Bring a waterproof jacket, carry your own hydration, and consider bringing energy gels or snacks for longer distances. A change of warm, dry clothes for after the race is highly recommended.
Are there aid stations on the course?
Check the official website for specific aid station locations and what will be provided. For trail events in this region, it's wise to carry your own water and nutrition, especially for the half marathon distance.
Can I collect my race bib on the day?
Race day registration is typically available, but check the official website for specific times and whether pre-registration is required. Arrive early to allow time for bib collection, gear check, and warm-up before your start time.
Is there accommodation nearby?
Forrest has limited local accommodation including the Forrest General Store and Guesthouse. Nearby Colac (30km) offers more hotel options. Apollo Bay (45km south) is another popular base. Book early as the Otways are a popular weekend destination, especially during event weekends.
