Starting from the Pillars of Wisdom near the Swan Street Bridge, runners tackle the smooth sealed path that undulates through the gardens with views of the city skyline, Yarra River, and lush parkland. The 4km distance covers one complete lap, while the 8km option doubles the circuit. This flat to gently rolling course features a mix of shaded tree-lined sections and open stretches, with the famous Anderson Street hill providing the main challenge. The well-marked route is popular with runners of all abilities and offers a perfect opportunity to test your fitness in a supportive time trial environment.
Quick Facts
Getting There
The Pillars of Wisdom start point is located on the Tan Track just south of the Swan Street Bridge in Melbourne's Royal Botanic Gardens. By car, use the nearby parking along Anderson Street, Birdwood Avenue, or surrounding streets - arrive early as parking fills quickly on event mornings. Public transport options include tram routes along St Kilda Road, with a short walk into the gardens. Aim to arrive 15-20 minutes before the 7:30 AM start time to register, pay your entry fee, and warm up.
Weather & What to Pack
June in Melbourne brings cool winter conditions, with typical morning temperatures ranging from 6-12°C at the 7:30 AM start time. Expect crisp mornings with potential for light rain or cloudy skies, though the Tan's tree cover provides some shelter. Dress in layers with long sleeves and running tights or leggings - you'll warm up quickly once racing. The sealed surface can be slippery when wet, so choose appropriate footwear. While hydration needs are lower in cooler weather, bring water for post-run recovery. Check the forecast before race day and prepare for changeable conditions.
