About This Event
Very flat course mainly on well maintained, shady, sandy paths along the beautiful Mildura riverfront. Held during King's Birthday long weekend. Course incorporates sections of the popular Mildura Weir parkrun. Caters to all levels from elite runners to weekend joggers and walkers.
Course Description
The Mildura Riverfront Marathon Festival features a spectacularly flat out-and-back course along the banks of the mighty River Murray. Starting at the scenic Powerhouse Precinct on Hugh King Drive, all distances utilise sections of the popular Mildura Weir parkrun trail, offering well-maintained, shady sandy paths with stunning riverfront views. The marathon consists of two laps of the half-marathon route, whilst shorter distances use progressively shorter sections of the same trail. The course extends beyond Apex Park for longer distances, offering peaceful riverside scenery throughout. Whilst the terrain is predominantly flat with only minor inclines, the narrow paths in sections require courtesy between runners. This makes it an ideal event for all abilities, from elite marathoners chasing times to weekend joggers and walkers enjoying the beautiful natural surroundings during Victoria's King's Birthday long weekend.
Quick Facts
Getting There
The event is based at the Powerhouse Precinct on Hugh King Drive in Mildura, walking distance from the town centre and directly on the riverfront. The venue offers ample toilet facilities and on-site café. Parking is available near the Powerhouse Precinct, though arriving early is recommended, particularly for the 9:00 AM marathon start. The venue's central location makes it easily accessible from local accommodation options. For those staying in houseboats on the Murray, the venue is right on the riverfront. Aim to arrive at least 30-45 minutes before your start time to collect your bib and settle in.
Weather & What to Pack
Early June in Mildura typically offers cool to mild winter conditions, ideal for distance running. Expect morning temperatures ranging from 5-15°C, though Mildura's inland location can bring crisp starts. The region generally experiences low humidity and clear skies during winter, with minimal rainfall expected. However, conditions can vary, so prepare for potential wind along the exposed riverfront sections. Dress in layers that can be shed as you warm up—long sleeves and light gloves for the start are advisable. Despite the winter timing, hydration remains crucial on this flat, exposed course. Sunscreen is recommended as UV levels can still be significant even in winter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I register on race day?
Yes, late registration is available at bib pick-up locations (Friday 1-6 PM at The Athlete's Foot, Saturday 9-11 AM at the Powerhouse, or race day from 7:30 AM). Full-price fees apply and medals cannot be guaranteed on the day for late registrants, though one will be posted to you afterwards. The free Kids Dash accepts registrations until 1:30 PM on race day.
When can I collect my race bib?
Bibs and pre-purchased t-shirts can be collected at three times: Friday 6 June (1-6 PM) at The Athlete's Foot in Mildura Central, Saturday 7 June (9-11 AM) at the Powerhouse Hall, or race morning (7:30-8:30 AM) at the start line. Friends or family can collect on your behalf. Early collection is encouraged to avoid race-day congestion.
Are there cut-off times for the events?
No official cut-off times apply to any distance. However, marathon runners expecting to finish in over 5 hours should notify organisers on race day. Those taking more than 3 hours for the first marathon lap will be encouraged to retire and receive a half-marathon medal instead. This flexibility makes the event welcoming for all paces.
What facilities are available for water and personal items?
Multiple drink stations are positioned along the course (at 2.5km, 5km, 10.55km, and additional points for longer distances). Marathon and half-marathon runners are strongly encouraged to wear hydration vests or belts. A staffed marquee at the start line provides secure storage for personal items throughout the event. Shippy's café near the start line offers coffee and food before and after racing.
What do finishers receive?
All marathon, half-marathon, 10km, and 5km finishers receive an iconic Mildura Riverfront Marathon Festival medal featuring indigenous artwork by local artist Lorraine Mitchell. Trophies are awarded to the top three males and females in marathon, half-marathon, and 10km run categories, plus first male and female in the 5km. Event t-shirts are available for $45. Free fruit is provided at the finish line.
