Weather & What to Pack

Early May in Melbourne typically sees pleasant autumn conditions with daytime temperatures ranging from 12-19°C. Starting at 4pm means you'll run through afternoon warmth into cooler evening and potentially cold night temperatures. As this is a last-person-standing format, prepare for variable conditions including possible rain showers. Pack layers you can add as temperatures drop, and ensure you have lighting for night loops. The mild autumn weather is ideal for endurance running, though hydration remains important throughout.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Backyard/Frontyard Ultra?

A Backyard Ultra is a last-person-standing format where runners complete a 6.71km loop every hour, on the hour. You must finish each loop within the hour and start the next loop when the clock strikes. The race continues until only one runner remains - everyone else has either failed to complete a loop in time or withdrawn.

How long could this race last?

There's no set finish time - the race continues until there's only one person left standing. Previous backyard ultras have lasted anywhere from 12 hours to multiple days. Come prepared with crew support, nutrition strategy, and mental resilience for a potentially very long event.

What should I bring?

Bring multiple pairs of shoes, clothing layers for changing temperatures, headtorch and reflective gear for night running, nutrition for between loops, and consider having a crew to help with logistics. You'll have approximately 45-50 minutes between loops to rest, refuel, and prepare.

Is there a time cut-off for each loop?

Yes - you must complete the 6.71km loop within one hour. The next loop starts exactly on the hour regardless of when you finish. If you don't make it back in time or fail to start the next loop, you're out of the race.

Can spectators attend?

Yes! The inner-city Studley Park location makes this an excellent event for spectators. Friends and family can watch you complete each loop and provide support throughout. The high-energy atmosphere with music creates a festival-like environment.
