Course Description
Set in the stunning Brindabella Ranges near Coree, GUMBY offers a unique backyard ultra challenge on a 6.7km loop course starting from Blue Range Hut. The traditional 'last one standing' format sees runners complete a lap every hour until only one remains. The scenic trail winds through native bushland with rolling terrain, offering mountain views and authentic Australian bush running. The multi-day festival includes GumbyMOON (Thursday evening start), GUMBY (Friday morning), and GumBABY (Saturday morning) options, plus the standalone BTrail 100K point-to-point ultra. Expect rocky trails, creek crossings, and variable footing typical of the Brindabellas. Basic facilities at the remote Blue Range Hut provide race headquarters and gathering point between laps.
Quick Facts
Getting There
Blue Range Hut is located in remote bushland approximately 70km southwest of Canberra via Brindabella Road. Access requires a capable vehicle as the final section on Blue Range Road is unsealed gravel. From Canberra, head south through Tharwa, then follow Brindabella Road west. The journey takes around 90 minutes. Limited parking is available at the hut. No public transport services this remote location. Arrive well before your start time to set up camp and crew areas.
Weather & What to Pack
Late April in the Brindabellas brings cool to cold conditions with daytime temperatures ranging 10-18°C, dropping to 0-5°C overnight. Expect possible frost, especially for the early morning BTrail start. Weather can change rapidly in the mountains with potential rain, wind, and even snow. Pack multiple layers including thermal base layers, waterproof jacket, beanie, and gloves. Backyard ultra runners need gear for overnight running including headtorch and warm clothing. Hydration is essential despite cooler temperatures. Monitor Bureau of Meteorology forecasts closely before the event.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a backyard ultra format?
Runners complete a 6.7km lap every hour on the hour. You must finish each lap within the hour to start the next one. The race continues until only one runner completes a lap that no one else finishes - the 'last one standing' wins. There's no predetermined finish time.
What are the differences between GumbyMOON, GUMBY, and GumBABY?
All three are backyard ultra events on the same 6.7km course. GumbyMOON starts Thursday 5pm, GUMBY starts Friday 9am, and GumBABY starts Saturday 8:30am. This allows runners to choose their preferred start time and potential duration, with the multi-day format creating a unique festival atmosphere.
What facilities are available at Blue Range Hut?
Blue Range Hut provides basic facilities including the race headquarters. This is remote bushland, so expect minimal amenities. Bring camping equipment if staying overnight, crew support gear, food, and all personal supplies. The location is off-grid with no shops or services nearby.
Do I need crew support?
While not mandatory, crew support is highly recommended for backyard ultras. You'll have limited time between laps to refuel, change gear, and rest. Experienced crew members who can anticipate your needs, manage nutrition, and provide motivation make a significant difference as the race progresses.
What gear should I bring for a backyard ultra?
Essential items include trail running shoes, headtorch with backup batteries, multiple clothing layers for changing weather, nutrition and hydration supplies for extended running, camping/shelter setup, chair for rest periods, and first aid kit. Prepare for potentially running through day and night cycles in mountain conditions.
