About This Event

Monthly walk, jog or run on tracks and bike paths from Weston Park featuring a handicap system. Around 200 women participate across 3km and 6km courses at paces from a gentle stroll to blistering run. Prizes for fastest on handicap finisher and barrel draws. Social running event held first Sunday of most months.

Course Description

The Jogalong takes place entirely within the scenic surrounds of Weston Park on Canberra's lakefront. All distances—6km, 3km, and 2km—follow dirt tracks and bike paths through the park, offering a mix of gentle trails and flat pathways. The course is largely sheltered by mature trees, providing shade and a pleasant running environment. The 6km handicap event challenges participants with a longer distance whilst maintaining an accessible, non-technical route. The 3km and 2km events are perfect for younger runners and beginners. With minimal elevation change and well-maintained surfaces, the course focuses on participation and enjoyment rather than speed, making it ideal for runners of all abilities in a supportive, women-focused atmosphere.

Getting There

Weston Park is located on the western shore of Lake Burley Griffin, approximately 5km from Canberra's city centre. By car, follow Cotter Road or Alexandrina Drive to Weston Park Road. Free parking is available in the park's car parks, but arrive early as spaces fill quickly. Public transport options include buses stopping along Cotter Road (check Transport Canberra timetables). Arrive at least 30 minutes before the 8am start to register, warm up, and familiarise yourself with the course.

Weather & What to Pack

Early April in Canberra brings mild autumn weather with morning temperatures typically ranging from 8-12°C, warming to 20-24°C by mid-morning. Expect crisp, clear conditions with lower humidity than summer months. The sun can still be strong once risen, so apply sunscreen before the race. Dress in layers you can remove—a light long-sleeve top or running jacket is ideal for the start. The park's tree cover provides natural shade along much of the course. Hydration is important, though conditions are generally comfortable for running.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to register in advance?

Registration is available on the day at Weston Park from approximately 7:30am. Non-members pay $5 (adults) or $2 (under 18s). Canberra Runners members participate for free. First-time participants can try two events free before joining.

What is the handicap system?

The 6km event uses a handicap system where runners start at staggered times based on their predicted finish, giving everyone a chance to win regardless of speed. This creates an inclusive, competitive atmosphere where a gentle jogger can cross the line alongside faster runners.

Can boys participate?

Boys aged 12 years and under can enter the 3km and 2km events. The 6km handicap event is for women, girls, and non-binary or gender-diverse people who normally include themselves in women's events.

What should I bring on the day?

Wear comfortable running shoes suitable for dirt paths and bring water for hydration. The event is low-key and social, so no special gear is required. Consider bringing a light jacket for before and after the race during cooler autumn mornings.

Are there prizes or timing?

Yes! Prizes are awarded for the fastest handicap finisher in the 6km event, plus there are barrel draw prizes. The emphasis is on participation and enjoyment in a friendly, supportive environment rather than competitive racing.
