About This Event
One of the toughest, most challenging, most spectacular and rewarding mountain trail runs in Australia. The 100 mile (160 km) course takes in six major climbs with 7,600 m of ascent and descent including Mt Feathertop, Mt Hotham, Mt McKay, Spion Kopje, Mt Nelse and Victoria's highest mountain: Mt Bogong.
Course Description
The Alpine Challenge showcases some of Australia's most spectacular high-country terrain, with courses starting from Falls Creek Alpine Resort. The flagship 100 Mile course is an epic mountain odyssey featuring six major climbs totalling 7,600 metres of ascent and descent, traversing iconic peaks including Mt Feathertop, Mt Hotham, Mt McKay, Spion Kopje, Mt Nelse, and Victoria's highest summit, Mt Bogong. The shorter distances offer equally stunning alpine scenery with challenging elevation profiles through snowgum woodland, alpine meadows, and rocky ridgelines. Expect technical single-track sections, exposed high-country terrain, and breathtaking panoramic views across the Victorian Alps. Each course finishes at the Slalom Plaza in Falls Creek village, where post-race celebrations await.
Quick Facts
Getting There
Falls Creek is located approximately 375km northeast of Melbourne via the Hume Highway and Great Alpine Road. From the highway, follow signs to Mt Beauty, then continue up the sealed mountain road to Falls Creek village (31km climb). Day visitor parking is available at Falls Creek with fees applying. The race start/finish is at Slalom Plaza in the village centre. Allow 4.5-5 hours driving from Melbourne. Arrive the day before to acclimatise to the altitude and secure parking close to the start area.
Weather & What to Pack
April marks early autumn in the Victorian High Country, with temperatures ranging from 5-15°C during the day, dropping to near freezing overnight and at higher elevations. Weather can be highly unpredictable with possibilities of rain, wind, fog, and even snow at altitude. Conditions vary dramatically between valley floors and exposed ridgelines. Pack multiple layers including weatherproof jacket, gloves, and hat. Sunscreen is essential due to increased UV exposure at altitude. Be prepared for rapid weather changes and carry mandatory safety gear as specified by race organisers.
