Course Description

The 2 Rivers Backyard Ultra features a stunning 6.72km loop along Echuca's Scenic Drive Trail, following the majestic Murray River before transitioning onto pavement beside the bridge to New South Wales. Runners complete an out-and-back section that turns at the iconic 'Blue Tree', then tackle a challenging hill on the return journey. The course offers uninterrupted river views throughout, creating a scenic backdrop for your hourly laps. This simple yet captivating route allows you to take in the natural beauty of the Murray River region as you push your limits in this last-person-standing format, where participants run one loop every hour until only one runner remains.

Getting There

The race starts at Boat Ramp Carpark on Scenic Drive in Echuca, VIC. Major carpark facilities are available at the venue. Echuca is located on the Murray River, approximately 210km north of Melbourne via the Northern Highway. Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before the noon start to set up your crew area, register, and prepare for the first loop. Public transport options are limited; driving is recommended for this regional location.

Weather & What to Pack

April in Echuca brings mild autumn weather, with daytime temperatures typically ranging from 14-24°C, dropping to 7-12°C overnight. As a backyard ultra running through the night and potentially multiple days, prepare for temperature variations. Pack layers including long sleeves, a lightweight jacket, and a headlamp for night loops (mandatory). The riverside location may bring morning fog and dew. April generally sees low rainfall, but pack waterproof gear just in case. Hydration remains crucial despite the cooler temperatures, with comprehensive aid station support provided throughout.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a backyard ultra work?

Runners complete a 6.72km loop every hour on the hour. You must be on the start line when the bell rings to begin each loop. The race continues until only one runner remains - they are the winner. There is no time limit; the event runs until all but one runner withdraws or is eliminated.

What facilities are available at the event village?

The village area features marquees and tents for rest between loops, a comprehensive aid station stocked with Tailwind Nutrition, water, lollies, chips, fruit, soup, and noodles. A camp kitchen includes a microwave, toaster, kettle, and sandwich press. At least one food van will be on-site providing coffee, hot food, and cold drinks for participants and crew.

What are the headlamp requirements for night loops?

All runners must wear a head or chest lamp for the entirety of night loops. If you don't have a lamp when the bell rings to start a night loop, you cannot continue. The race director will announce which loops require lights well in advance. Receiving a light after the bell rings constitutes aid and leads to disqualification.

Can I receive aid from crew on the course?

No. Runners must not accept aid in any form while on the course, including dropping off or collecting equipment like clothing. All aid must be obtained in the event village between loops. You are permitted to leave the course to use the toilet during your loop.

What happens if I don't finish within the hour?

You must complete the loop and be in the starting corral when the bell rings for the next loop. If you're not in the corral when the next loop commences, you will be disqualified. The key is managing your pace and recovery time wisely throughout the event.
