Course Description

The VRR Tan Time Trial follows Melbourne's iconic 'Tan Track' circuit around the Royal Botanic Gardens, starting from the historic Pillars of Wisdom near Swan Street Bridge. The 8km distance completes two laps of the famous 3.8km loop, whilst the 4km option covers one full lap. This flat, sealed path offers runners a fast, traffic-free course with stunning views across the gardens and city skyline. The well-maintained track features gentle undulations and several shaded sections beneath established trees. Popular with Melbourne's running community, the Tan provides an excellent opportunity to test your pace on a consistent, measured course. The scenic route along the Yarra River makes this one of Australia's most picturesque time trial venues.

Weather & What to Pack

March in Melbourne brings early autumn conditions with pleasant running weather. Expect morning temperatures between 12-18°C at the 7:30 AM start, warming as the sun rises. Conditions are generally mild with moderate humidity, though occasional warm spells can occur. The tree-lined Tan provides good shade coverage. Dress in light layers - a singlet or short-sleeve top with arm warmers you can remove is ideal. Early morning can be crisp, so bring a warm-up top. Sunscreen is recommended as UV levels remain moderate. Carry water for the 8km distance, particularly on warmer mornings.
