Event Details
Course Description
The Weston Creek Half Marathon and 10km both follow a scenic out-and-back course starting from Black Mountain Peninsula along Lake Burley Griffin. The entirely traffic-free route utilises bike paths with no road crossings, offering stunning lake views throughout. During the Canberra Balloon Festival period, runners are often treated to spectacular views of hot air balloons overhead. The half marathon features relay changeover points at 7km and 14km (for three-person teams) or at the 11.1km turnaround (for two-person teams). Two water stations service the course, with the finish line conveniently located adjacent to the presentation area near the start. The flat, fast course makes it an ideal preparation race for the Canberra Marathon in April.
Getting There
Black Mountain Peninsula is located off Garryowen Drive in Acton, approximately 5km from Canberra's city centre. Free parking is available at Black Mountain Peninsula car parks, though spaces fill quickly on race morning. Public transport options include bus routes to the National Museum stop, followed by a short walk. Arrive by 7:30 AM to allow time for bib collection, gear drop, and warm-up. Race bibs can be pre-collected from Runners Shop, Colbee Court, Phillip from Thursday to Saturday before the event.
Weather & What to Pack
Mid-March in Canberra typically brings mild autumn conditions, with morning temperatures ranging from 10-15°C, warming to 20-25°C by late morning. The nation's capital experiences low humidity and clear skies at this time of year, ideal for running. Early morning starts can be crisp, so wear a disposable warm layer to the start line. With minimal shade along the lakeside bike paths, apply sunscreen and wear a cap. Hydration is important despite the cooler temperatures, so utilise the water stations and drink adequately in the days before the race.
