Course Description

The Sealink Bruny Island Ultra & Relay offers two stunning distances—42.2km and 64km—along the scenic roads of Tasmania's Bruny Island. Starting from Dennes Point and finishing at the iconic Bruny Island Lighthouse, runners traverse rolling coastal terrain with breathtaking ocean views and native bushland. The course follows open roads with regular 2km changeover markers for relay teams. Solo runners choose their own start time between 4:00am and the latest allowable time to finish by 2:30pm, with a maximum 10.5-hour time limit. The right-hand side road running and marshalled checkpoints ensure safety on this point-to-point course. Support crews are essential for solo runners, with drink stations at 40km and the lighthouse finish.

Getting There

Access Bruny Island via the Bruny Island Ferry from Kettering (30-minute crossing). From the ferry terminal, turn left onto Missionary Road towards Barnes Bay to reach the start at Dennes Point, avoiding main road congestion. Allow extra time for ferry queues and check the Sealink ferry timetable in advance. Parking is available at the start area. The finish at the lighthouse is approximately 30 minutes' drive from Alonnah where presentations are held.

Weather & What to Pack

Late November in Tasmania brings mild spring conditions with temperatures typically ranging from 12-20°C. Bruny Island's coastal location means variable weather including potential wind, sun, and occasional showers. Early morning starts can be cool (8-12°C), warming through the day. Runners should prepare for all conditions with sun protection, light layers, and rain protection. The 10.5-hour time window means most runners will experience warming temperatures. Stay well-hydrated throughout, especially on warmer days. Light-coloured, visible clothing is mandatory for safety on open roads.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run solo or do I need a team?

Both options are available! You can tackle the 42.2km or 64km solo, or form a relay team of up to 10 people sharing the distance. Relay teams change runners approximately every 2km at designated roadside markers. Children as young as 10 can participate (likely in relay format).

What support do I need as a solo runner?

All solo runners must have at least one support crew. You must bring sufficient water to the island, as only Gatorade and water are provided at the 40km checkpoint and lighthouse finish. Support vehicles display hazard blinkers and wait ahead at 2km markers, not alongside runners.

When should I start and finish?

You choose your own start time (earliest 4:00am) to finish at the lighthouse by 2:30pm at the latest and no earlier than 11:00am. Maximum time limit is 10.5 hours. Plan realistically to allow the 30-minute drive back to Alonnah for 3:15pm presentations.

What are the road safety rules?

The course is open to traffic. Always run on the right-hand side, follow marshal directions, and wear light-coloured clothing. Relay changeovers must occur on the right side at 2km markers only. Earpods and music devices are prohibited. You may be required to stop for passing traffic—safety is the priority.

What's included in my entry fee?

Entry includes fruit at the start, Gatorade and water at 40km and finish, post-race refreshments at Hotel Bruny (soup, bread rolls, snacks), and presentations at 3:15pm. Entries close November 20th or when sold out—no day-of entries or refunds available.
