Getting There

The race starts at Waldheim near Cradle Mountain and finishes at Cynthia Bay, Lake St Clair, requiring logistics planning for the point-to-point course. Participants must review the mandatory live briefing and information booklet for detailed transport arrangements. Parks Tasmania access during permit season (October-May) has restrictions on training access. Plan to arrive the day before for race briefings and gear checks, and arrange vehicle shuttles or organised transport between start and finish points.

Weather & What to Pack

February in Tasmania's central highlands brings variable alpine conditions with temperatures ranging from 8-20°C at lower elevations, but significantly colder at altitude. Expect changeable weather including possible rain, wind, and even snow on exposed sections like Pelion Gap. The wilderness location means rapid weather changes are common. Pack compulsory gear as specified including warm layers, waterproofs, and emergency equipment. Early morning starts mean cold temperatures initially, with potential heat later in clearings. Prepare for all four seasons in one day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What experience do I need to enter?

The Cradle Mountain Run requires previous ultra-distance running experience. Entry is limited to 60 runners, and you must demonstrate your ultra credentials when applying. This is not suitable for first-time ultra runners.

Can I train on the Overland Track before the event?

During permit season (1 October - 31 May), access is restricted. Day pass holders can only run to Waterfall Valley from the north, Pelion Gap from Arm River Track, or Pine Valley turnoff from the south. Longer distances require an Overland Track Permit. From 1 June - 30 September, you can generally run any distance with a Parks Pass.

What gear is compulsory?

The 2026 event requires new timing cards and compulsory gear (compass removed from 2026 requirements). Full details are in the Information Booklet. Expect wilderness safety equipment, navigation tools, emergency supplies, and weather protection. Gear checks are conducted before the race.

Is there a mandatory briefing?

Yes, a mandatory live briefing will be held in 2026. You should also review the 2021 pre-recorded briefing and 2022 Parks and Wildlife Service Ranger briefing to familiarise yourself with course requirements and wilderness protocols.

How do I navigate the course?

The course follows the well-marked Overland Track. Download the Avenza mobile map and review the interactive course map available on the website. While the track is generally well-defined, navigation skills are essential for this wilderness ultra event.
