Course Description

Ultra Adelaide traces the renowned Heysen Trail, launching from the rugged hills of Kuitpo and climbing through Mount Lofty, Cleland, Morialta and Black Hill before descending along the River Torrens. Runners experience a mix of native bushland, open ridgelines, and historic parklands, with spectacular views of the Adelaide skyline as they approach the finish. The course includes over 4,800 m of elevation gain for the 100‑mile distance, with shorter routes offering proportionally less climbing. Aid stations are strategically placed at Rocky Creek, Mylor, Mt Lofty, McElligott’s Quarry, Cleland, Norton Summit, Montacute, Gorge Road and Brookway Park, providing water, nutrition and morale boosts. Whether tackling the 21 km or the full ultra, participants enjoy a well‑marked trail that winds from the mountains to the heart of the city.

Weather & What to Pack

July is winter in Adelaide, with average highs around 16 °C and lows near 8 °C, and about 85 mm of rain over nine days. Expect cool, often crisp mornings that can warm up under sunshine, but occasional rain and wind are common. Runners should dress in layers – a moisture‑wicking base, an insulating mid‑layer and a waterproof, wind‑proof jacket. A warm hat, gloves and thermal socks are advisable for early‑start distances. Stay hydrated, but keep fluids in insulated containers to prevent freezing.
