Course Description

The Great Island Trek launches from Picnic Bay Jetty and winds through Magnetic Island’s iconic trail network. Runners will pass the sweeping views over Geoffrey Bay, climb to the Sphinx Lookout, explore WWII forts, descend to Florence Bay and tackle the Searchlight Tower out‑and‑back. The 25km route adds a climb to Hawkings Point for panoramic Cleveland Bay vistas before looping back to the finish line at the Nomads venue for the TrekFest celebration. Expect mixed terrain – sandy tracks, rocky climbs and forest paths – all fully supported with hydration stations and bag transfers.

Getting There

The trek starts at Picnic Bay Jetty on Magnetic Island. Most participants arrive via the SeaLink passenger ferry from Townsville to Nelly Bay, then walk to the start line. A charter bus returns trekkers to the Nelly Bay ferry terminal after the event. For exact parking, ferry schedules and other transport details, visit the official event website.

Weather & What to Pack

August is winter in Queensland, but Magnetic Island enjoys mild conditions – typically 12‑22 °C with low humidity and plenty of sunshine. Dress in layers: a breathable base layer, a light fleece or long‑sleeve top, and a wind‑proof jacket for exposed sections. A hat and sunglasses are useful for bright mornings, and a reusable water bottle or hydration pack will keep you comfortable.
