Course Description
The Great Island Trek offers a challenging and scenic route across Magnetic Island, with breathtaking coastal views and rugged terrain. Runners will traverse through the island’s natural beauty, including national parks and historic sites. The course is fully supported with hydration and fruit stations, and includes a post-event celebration at TrekFest. Whether you're tackling the 5km or the 25km, you’ll experience the magic of Magnetic Island in a supportive and inclusive environment.
Getting There
Magnetic Island is reached from Townsville by SeaLink Queensland passenger ferry, which runs up to 17 services a day and takes about 20 minutes to Nelly Bay. If you're bringing a car, the Magnetic Island Ferries vehicle barge departs from South Townsville (booking ahead required), with secure parking at the South Townsville terminal. The start line at Magnetic Island State School is a 500m walk from the Nelly Bay ferry terminal.
Weather & What to Pack
August is winter in Australia, but Magnetic Island stays mild and tropical, with days typically reaching 24-25°C and overnight lows around 17-18°C. Humidity is moderate and the tropical sun is strong even in winter, so competitors are urged to prepare for heat over the 3-7 hours some distances take to complete. Sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses), loose breathable clothing and a hydration system are all recommended.

What is the entry fee for the 25km event?
The entry fee for the 25km event is $95.70, including GST.
Are there any age restrictions for the event?
There are no age restrictions for the 5km and 12km events. For the 18km and 25km, participants must be at least 16 years old.
What is included in the entry fee?
Entry includes a high-quality event tee, on-course hydration and fruit stations, professional photography, a bag transfer, entry to the Tropical Daze live music event and Trekfest, and a chartered bus transfer from the finish at Nomads back to the Nelly Bay ferry terminal.
Is a hydration pack compulsory?
Yes. This is a plastic-free event with no single-use cups or bottles on course, so every participant on every distance must carry their own hydration pack (1.5-2L recommended) to refill at water stations.
What mandatory gear do I need to carry?
Every participant must carry their own hydration pack and a snake bandage on an honour system - there are no equipment checks, but both are considered essential for safety on the trail.
