Course Description

Set amidst the Southern Flinders Ranges, the Melrose Running Festival offers three trail distances that showcase the park’s diverse landscape. The 15 km ‘King of the Mount’ climbs to the summit of Mt. Remarkable and returns via a winding descent, perfect for those seeking a challenging yet manageable climb. The 30 km route weaves through open ridgelines, forested valleys and the iconic Hidden Gorge, delivering continuous elevation changes and panoramic views. The 50 km Ultra is a true test of endurance, featuring steep ascents, technical sections, and an epic 8 km downhill finish from the summit into the historic township of Melrose. A 2‑person relay option splits the ultra into two 25 km legs, allowing teams to share the adventure.

Getting There

The festival takes place in Mt. Remarkable National Park, just outside the historic town of Melrose, South Australia. Weather & What to Pack

July is winter in South Australia, and Mt. Remarkable National Park experiences cool mornings with temperatures often between 5 °C and 12 °C, warming to 15 °C mid‑day. Expect crisp, dry air and occasional light rain. Dress in breathable layers—thermal base, long‑sleeve top, and a wind‑proof jacket—plus a hat and gloves for early start. Hydration remains essential; carry a water bottle or use aid stations, and consider electrolyte supplements if conditions are dry.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I register for the Melrose Running Festival?

Registration is handled through the Adelaide Trail Runners website. Visit the event page for the online entry form and any deadlines. If registration is closed, you can contact the organisers for wait‑list options.

What are the start times and are there cut‑off times for each distance?

All distances – 15 km, 30 km, 50 km solo and the 50 km relay – start at 7:15 am on race day. Specific cut‑off times are not listed on the event page; please check the official website for the latest details.

Do I need to meet any qualifying criteria for the 50 km Ultra?

Yes. The 50 km Ultra has a qualifying requirement to ensure participants have sufficient trail‑running experience. Details on the exact criteria can be found on the event website or by contacting Adelaide Trail Runners.

What gear should I bring for the trail runs?

Because the courses involve steep climbs, technical sections and variable weather, we recommend trail‑running shoes with good grip, a hydration pack or bottles, layered clothing (including a wind‑proof jacket), a hat, gloves for the early start, and a headlamp if you expect low light. Check the event’s gear checklist for any mandatory items.

Are there aid stations and what facilities are provided on race day?

Aid stations are typically positioned at key points along each course, offering water and electrolyte drinks. Toilets are available at the start/finish area. For exact locations and additional services, refer to the official event website or the course maps.
