About This Event

The Kiama Triathlon is a spectacular multisport event set along the stunning NSW South Coast. Featuring a scenic ocean swim, coastal bike leg, and run through Kiama's charming foreshore, this event suits first-timers and seasoned triathletes alike.

Course Description

The Kiama Triathlon takes full advantage of one of NSW's most picturesque coastal settings. The swim leg takes place in the clear waters off Kiama's foreshore, followed by a bike course that winds through the rolling terrain of the Illawarra escarpment and coastal headlands. Riders are rewarded with sweeping ocean views before transitioning to a run leg that hugs the foreshore and takes in the famous Kiama blowhole precinct. The course offers a genuine challenge while remaining accessible to athletes of varying experience levels, making it a favourite on the NSW triathlon calendar.

Getting There

Kiama is located approximately 120km south of Sydney via the Princes Motorway (M1). Parking is available near the Kiama Harbour and foreshore precinct, though spaces fill early on event day — arrive at least 60–90 minutes before your wave start. Kiama is well-served by NSW TrainLink from Sydney's Central Station, with the station a short walk from the foreshore.

Weather & What to Pack

May in Kiama brings mild, early-autumn conditions typical of the NSW South Coast. Expect daytime temperatures between 14°C and 20°C, with cool mornings at race start. The ocean water temperature will be around 18–20°C — a wetsuit is recommended for the swim. Coastal breezes can be a factor on the bike leg. Bring warm layers for post-race recovery and pack sunscreen regardless of cloud cover.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a triathlon-specific bike to participate?

A road bike or hybrid is perfectly acceptable for the sprint distance. While time trial or triathlon bikes offer an aerodynamic advantage, any roadworthy bike with working brakes and gears is allowed. Check the Elite Energy event rules for specific equipment requirements.

Is a wetsuit compulsory for the swim leg?

Wetsuit legality depends on water temperature on race day. In May, Kiama's ocean is typically around 18–20°C, which usually means wetsuits are permitted and recommended for warmth and buoyancy. Organisers will confirm wetsuit rules in the pre-race briefing.

What should I bring to transition?

Set up your transition area with your bike, helmet (mandatory), cycling shoes, running shoes, race belt, nutrition, and sunglasses. All equipment must be racked before transition closes. Arrive early to secure a good rack position and familiarise yourself with the layout.

Is there a minimum age to enter?

Minimum age requirements vary by distance and organiser. Elite Energy events typically require participants to be at least 16 years of age for sprint triathlon. Check the official event page for specific age category rules and junior event options.

Where can I find results and timing information?

Live timing and official results are published on the Elite Energy website at eliteenergy.com.au following the event. Chip timing is used for all participants, with splits recorded for swim, T1, bike, T2, and run legs.
