About This Event
Join the 22nd annual Somerset Rail Trail Classic on Australia's longest recreational rail trail. Choose from 3km or 8km run/walk, or 20km or 44km bike along the scenic Brisbane Valley Rail Trail. A family-friendly event for all fitness levels.
Course Description
The Somerset Rail Trail Classic follows the historic Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, Australia's longest recreational rail trail. The 3km run/walk begins at Vernor, the 8km starts at Lowood, whilst cyclists depart from Coominya (20km) or Esk (44km). All events converge at the finish line at Fernvale Sports Park on Brouff Road. The converted railway corridor rolls through farming country, small townships, and Queensland bushland, offering breathtaking views of the Brisbane Valley and Brisbane River. The largely flat-to-undulating trail surface is accessible for all fitness levels, from young families pushing prams to seasoned cyclists tackling the full 44km challenge.
Quick Facts
Getting There
Fernvale is approximately 70km west of Brisbane via the Warrego Highway through Ipswich. The finish line is at Fernvale Sports Park, Brouff Road. Parking maps are provided for all start locations (Esk, Coominya, Lowood, and Fernvale). Note: no parking at Vernor — 3km participants must park at Fernvale or Lowood and use the free shuttle bus to the start line. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your start time.
Weather & What to Pack
July is mid-winter in south-east Queensland, delivering ideal conditions for running and cycling. Expect cool mornings of around 6–10°C at the 8:30–9:00 AM start, warming to a pleasant 18–22°C through mid-morning. The Brisbane Valley can experience light overnight frosts, so dress in removable warm layers. Conditions are typically sunny with low humidity. Carry a water bottle and apply sunscreen even in winter — the Queensland sun can be deceptively strong on clear July days.
