About This Event
Queensland adventure racing series featuring trekking, mountain biking and kayaking. Teams navigate wilderness course with map and compass. Family-friendly weekend event achievable by novices whilst challenging experienced athletes.
Course Description
The Escape Raid offers two distinct navigation challenges across Lake Wivenhoe's wilderness terrain. The 8 Hour Rogaine Championship on Saturday tests teams' orienteering skills as they trek through unmarked bushland, collecting checkpoints using only map and compass. The diverse landscape features off-trail navigation through native forest, undulating terrain, and scenic lake views. Sunday's 3 Hour Paddlegaine brings a completely different challenge, with teams kayaking across Lake Wivenhoe to locate water-based checkpoints. Both events reward strategic route planning as much as physical fitness, making them accessible to novices whilst challenging experienced adventure athletes. All stages run from the lakeside Captain Logan's Camp, creating a compact, spectator-friendly race village.
Quick Facts
Getting There
Captain Logan's Camp is located approximately one hour's drive west of Brisbane via the Brisbane Valley Highway. Follow signs to Lake Wivenhoe, then Captain Logan's Camp Recreation Area. Ample camping space is available at the race HQ with parking included. Arrive by 9:30 AM Saturday for registration and map handout. The lakeside location offers direct access to both the trekking terrain and paddling areas, with all facilities centralised at the one venue.
Weather & What to Pack
June in Southeast Queensland brings mild winter conditions, ideal for endurance events. Expect daytime temperatures ranging from 11-21°C, with cooler mornings and evenings near the lake. The region typically enjoys low humidity and clear skies during winter, though overnight temperatures can drop to 5-10°C at the campsite. Pack layers for the trek stage, including a windproof jacket. Sun protection remains essential during daylight hours. For the Sunday paddlegaine, consider a wetsuit or dry bag for warm clothing, as early morning water temperatures will be cool.
