Course Description

The O'Connor Ridge run/walk handicap is part of ACTMA's monthly trail running series, held on forest trails and bushland around Canberra. Starting from the corner of Purdie Street and Vowels Crescent in Bruce, participants tackle scenic courses through the natural terrain of O'Connor Ridge. The courses wind through native bushland, offering both short and long distance options on mostly unpaved surfaces. The handicap format levels the playing field, giving runners and walkers of all abilities a chance to compete fairly based on their previous performances. Expect undulating trails with natural obstacles, tree cover, and quintessential Canberra bushland scenery. The courses showcase the capital's beautiful natural spaces whilst providing a genuine trail running challenge.

Weather & What to Pack

Late September in Canberra brings early spring conditions with cool to mild temperatures. Expect morning temperatures between 6-12°C at the 9:00 AM start, warming to 15-18°C if you're still out mid-morning. Conditions can be changeable, with possible showers, frost, or clear sunshine. The bush location offers some wind protection but can be cooler than urban areas. Dress in layers you can remove as you warm up. The trail surface may be damp or muddy if there's been recent rain. Apply sunscreen even on cloudy days, as UV levels increase through spring.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be an ACTMA member to participate?

Yes, these monthly handicap events are for ACTMA members aged 30 and over. Membership provides access to all club events including monthly handicaps, track and field sessions, and throws competitions. Visit the official website for membership details and application forms.

How does the handicap system work?

The handicap format gives everyone a chance to win regardless of speed. Your start time is staggered based on previous performances, with slower participants starting earlier. This means the fastest runner on the day crosses the finish line first. New participants receive an estimated handicap based on their predicted time.

What should I wear for a trail handicap?

Trail running shoes with good grip are recommended as the courses are on unpaved bushland tracks. Wear layers suitable for spring conditions - typically a long-sleeve top that you can remove if needed. The bush setting can be cooler than urban areas, so bring a light jacket for before and after the race.

Are there facilities at the start/finish area?

The club provides tea and biscuits after the event, which is a great opportunity to socialise with fellow members. The start location is in a residential/parkland area, so facilities are limited. Use toilet facilities before arriving and bring your own water bottle for hydration.

Can I participate in both the run and walk events?

You typically enter one event per handicap day - either a short course run, long course run, or short course walk. The events run concurrently with staggered starts. Speak to the event organiser on the day if you have questions about which category suits you best.
