About This Event
ACT Masters Athletics event for runners and walkers aged 30+. Part of the ACT masters athletics calendar offering competitive and social running opportunities.
Course Description
The Goorooyarroo Run/Walk Handicap takes place in the stunning Goorooyarroo Nature Reserve in Throsby, a protected grassland sanctuary on Canberra's northern fringe. Participants choose from short course (approximately 5km) and long course (approximately 10km) running options, plus a short course walk. The reserve's trails wind through native grasslands and eucalypt woodlands, offering runners a peaceful bush setting with undulating terrain. As part of ACTMA's monthly handicap series, the course provides both scenic beauty and a fair competitive format where runners of all abilities start at staggered times based on their previous performances. The trail surfaces are natural and may include grass, dirt paths, and some gentle climbs, making this a true nature reserve experience.
Quick Facts
Getting There
Goorooyarroo Nature Reserve is located in Throsby, approximately 15km north of Canberra's city centre. Access is via Horse Park Drive, with parking available at the designated reserve entrance. From Gungahlin, take Horse Park Drive north towards the Federal Highway. Allow 20-25 minutes from central Canberra. Limited public transport serves this area, so driving is recommended. Arrive by 8:45 AM to allow time for registration and pre-race briefing before the 9:00 AM handicap start.
Weather & What to Pack
Late August in the ACT brings late winter conditions with cool to cold temperatures. Expect morning temperatures between 0-10°C, potentially warming to 12-15°C by mid-morning. The day may be crisp and clear, though occasional cloud cover and light showers are possible. Dress in layers with long sleeves and tights or track pants for the start. The reserve's exposed grasslands can be windy, so consider a windproof layer. The natural trail surface may be damp or muddy if recent rain has occurred. Hydration remains important despite cooler conditions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be a member to participate?
ACTMA events are primarily for members aged 30 and over, though visitors are often welcome. Contact the club through their website or Facebook page to confirm guest participation and registration details for this specific event.
How does the handicap system work?
Handicap events use staggered start times based on previous performances, allowing runners of all abilities to compete fairly. Slower runners start first, faster runners later, with the goal of everyone finishing together. It rewards personal improvement and makes racing exciting for all fitness levels.
What should I wear for trail running in the reserve?
Trail running shoes with good grip are recommended for the natural surfaces. Wear layers suitable for cool winter conditions - long sleeves, running tights or track pants. Gaiters may help if trails are muddy. Don't forget gloves and a beanie for the early start.
Are there facilities at the nature reserve?
Goorooyarroo Nature Reserve has limited facilities. ACTMA typically provides tea and biscuits after events. Bring your own water bottle and any nutrition you need. Toilets may be limited, so plan accordingly.
Can I walk instead of run?
Yes! The short course walk event is specifically designed for walkers. ACTMA's philosophy is participation and fitness through fellowship, welcoming everyone from beginners to elite athletes aged 30 and over.
