The handicap format levels the playing field, making every participant competitive regardless of age or ability. With courses designed for both runners and walkers, this monthly event embodies the Masters Athletics philosophy of fitness through fellowship in a stunning natural environment.
Quick Facts
Getting There
Stromlo Forest Park is located approximately 15km west of Canberra's city centre via Cotter Road. Free parking is available at the forest park precinct. From the city, take Cotter Road towards Weston Creek and follow signs to Stromlo Forest Park. Public transport options are limited, so driving or carpooling with fellow club members is recommended. Arrive at least 30 minutes early to collect your race number, warm up, and familiarise yourself with the course start area.
Weather & What to Pack
Late July in Canberra brings winter conditions with morning temperatures typically ranging from 0-10°C. Expect crisp, clear mornings with possible frost, though conditions can be milder. The forested setting at Stromlo may provide some wind protection but can feel cooler in shaded sections. Dress in layers with thermal base layers, a running jacket, gloves, and a beanie for the start. The sun usually provides warmth by mid-morning. Despite the cold, winter running in Canberra offers excellent conditions with low humidity and often stunning clear blue skies.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a handicap race and how does it work?
Handicap races give slower runners a head start based on their predicted finish time, so everyone has a chance to win regardless of speed or age. Your handicap improves as your fitness develops throughout the year, making each race competitive and rewarding personal improvement.
Do I need to be a member to participate?
While ACT Masters Athletics welcomes all runners and walkers aged 30+, you'll need to be a member to participate in regular club events. Membership provides access to all monthly handicaps, track and field sessions, and social activities throughout the year.
What should I bring on race day?
Bring appropriate trail running shoes, warm layered clothing for winter conditions, water bottle, and your race number if pre-assigned. The club provides tea and biscuits after the event. Consider bringing a warm jacket or blanket for after your run.
Are the courses suitable for walking?
Yes, there's a dedicated short course walk option at each monthly handicap event. The trails are well-maintained and suitable for walkers, though some sections may be uneven. Walking is encouraged as part of the club's inclusive approach to fitness.
What happens if I'm new to trail running?
Beginners are very welcome! The handicap system ensures you'll be competitive from your first race. Course marshals provide direction, and the friendly club atmosphere means experienced members are always happy to offer guidance. Start with the short course to build confidence.
