Course Description

The Townsville Castle Hill Foot Race offers two challenging distance options on one of North Queensland's most iconic landmarks. Castle Hill rises 286 metres above sea level, providing runners with a steep, sustained climb through winding pathways and sections of natural bushland. The 4.2km course is perfect for first-time hill runners, whilst the 7.5km option tests experienced athletes with extended elevation gain. Both routes reward effort with spectacular panoramic views across Townsville, Cleveland Bay, and Magnetic Island. The descent requires careful footwork on uneven terrain, making this a true test of both climbing power and technical running skill.

Getting There

The race starts from Kennedy Street in North Ward, at the base of Castle Hill. Street parking is available along Kennedy Street and surrounding North Ward residential streets—arrive early as spaces fill quickly on race day. The venue is approximately 3km from Townsville CBD. No direct public transport serves the start area, so carpooling is recommended. Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before your start time for registration and warm-up.

Weather & What to Pack

Early June in Townsville brings mild, pleasant conditions during the tropical dry season. Expect morning temperatures between 16-22°C at the start, warming as the sun rises. Humidity is lower than summer months but still present. The exposed sections of Castle Hill offer little shade, so sun protection is essential. Start hydrated and carry water if possible. Light, breathable running gear is recommended, along with sunscreen and a cap. Conditions are typically ideal for hill running with minimal rain risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I walk the course if needed?

Yes, many participants walk sections of the climb. The course remains open for walkers, though you should be comfortable with sustained uphill effort and uneven trail surfaces.

What should I bring on race day?

Wear trail or road running shoes with good grip for the descent. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and water. The Townsville Road Runners club manages registration—check their website for specific race day requirements and timing.

Are there aid stations on the course?

Check with the Townsville Road Runners for official course support details. Given the distance, carrying your own hydration is advisable, particularly for the 7.5km option.
