Weather & What to Pack
May in southeast Queensland brings pleasant autumn conditions ideal for triathlon. Expect mild temperatures ranging from 12-23°C, with cooler mornings perfect for racing. The bay water temperature averages 21-22°C, comfortable for most athletes without a wetsuit, though wetsuits are typically permitted. Morning starts mean racing in cooler conditions before the day warms up. Sun protection remains essential with UV levels moderate to high. Pack layers for post-race as temperatures can be cool, especially if windy. Humidity is lower than summer months, making for comfortable racing conditions. Light winds are typical, though occasional stronger bay breezes can develop.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this event suitable for first-time triathletes?
Absolutely! The Try-a-Tri distance (200m swim, 5km bike, 1km run) is specifically designed for beginners. The calm bay swim conditions and flat course make it an ideal introduction to multisport racing. The Event Crew provides excellent support and clear course marking for all ability levels.
Do I need a wetsuit for the swim?
Wetsuits are optional in May as Moreton Bay water temperatures are typically around 21-22°C. Many athletes choose to swim without a wetsuit, but they're permitted if you prefer the extra warmth and buoyancy. Check the race day briefing for final wetsuit regulations.
What bike do I need for this event?
Any roadworthy bicycle is suitable - road bikes, mountain bikes, and hybrids are all welcome. Ensure your bike is in good working order with properly inflated tyres. Aero bars and disc wheels are typically allowed, but check the race rules for specific equipment regulations.
How early should I arrive on race day?
Plan to arrive 60-90 minutes before your allocated start time. This allows time for registration check-in, body marking, setting up your transition area, and attending the pre-race briefing. Transition areas typically close 15 minutes before the first wave starts.
Are there age group categories and prizes?
Yes, the Queensland Tri Series features comprehensive age group categories for both male and female competitors. Awards are typically presented across multiple divisions. This is also a points-scoring round for the overall series championship, so competitive athletes can accumulate points across multiple rounds.
