Weather & What to Pack
May in Queensland offers ideal racing conditions with mild autumn temperatures. Expect daytime maximums around 23-25°C and morning lows of 13-15°C, perfect for both the Saturday twilight running events and Sunday morning triathlon. The Moreton Bay location typically provides refreshing bayside breezes. Humidity is moderate compared to summer months. Swimmers should expect water temperatures around 20-22°C - wetsuits are optional but recommended for warmth and buoyancy. Apply sunscreen as UV levels remain moderate, and bring layers for pre-race warmth. Hydration remains important despite the cooler conditions, particularly for longer distances.
Frequently Asked Questions
What time should I arrive on race day?
For the Saturday running festival, arrive 30-45 minutes before your start time. For Sunday triathlon events, event check-in and bike racking opens at 5:00 AM. Classic and Club distance athletes must complete check-in by 6:00 AM and bike racking by 6:10 AM. Enticer and Kids participants have until 7:05 AM for check-in and 7:15 AM for bike racking.
Do I need a wetsuit for the swim?
Wetsuits are optional for all triathlon and aquabike distances at Moreton Bay. The protected bay conditions make for a comfortable swim, though many athletes choose to wear wetsuits for added buoyancy and warmth in May water temperatures.
Are there cut-off times I need to know about?
Yes. The Half Marathon has a 7:00 PM cut-off. For the Classic Triathlon, swimmers must complete the 2000m swim within 60 minutes, and must finish the swim plus 50km of the bike leg within 2 hours 45 minutes (on the last bike lap by 9:05 AM).
What do Pho3nix Kids participants receive?
All children entered in the Pho3nix Kids Triathlon receive a complimentary Pho3nix t-shirt and swimming cap. It's compulsory to wear the provided swimming cap during the swim and the t-shirt during the run leg.
Can I access transition during the event?
Only competitors are allowed in the transition area. For Pho3nix Kids events, one parent per child may enter transition during setup and pack down only, but not during the event. Do not jump transition fences as this leads to disqualification. Wait for the official announcement before collecting your bike after finishing.
