Weather & What to Pack
Late April in Byron Bay typically offers ideal autumn racing conditions, with average temperatures ranging from 14-23°C. Expect mild mornings that warm up during the race, with moderate humidity levels. The subtropical climate means occasional showers are possible, though autumn is generally drier than summer. Ocean water temperatures are usually comfortable at around 21-22°C, though a wetsuit may still be mandatory depending on conditions. Apply sunscreen liberally as UV levels remain high in northern NSW. Bring layers for pre-race warmth and cap/sunglasses for the run. Stay well-hydrated throughout the event.
Frequently Asked Questions
When do entries close and can I enter a team?
Official entries close 10 days prior to the event (16 April 2026), with late entries available until Friday 24 April unless sold out. Both individual and team entries are accepted, with options for relay teams (different athletes per leg) and 'All In' teams where multiple athletes can compete together.
Do I need a Triathlon Australia license?
If you're not a Triathlon Australia member, you'll need to purchase a One Day License (ODL) when registering. All team members in a team entry also require an ODL unless they hold current TA membership. This provides event insurance and meets Triathlon Australia requirements.
What are the age requirements?
The event welcomes participants from 7 years and up. Kids events cater to younger athletes aged 7-15 years. Standard age group categories apply, with your age group determined by your age on 31 December of the event year (2026). Under-age participants cannot compete in adult categories for safety reasons.
Is this a wetsuit swim and will my bike be secure?
Wetsuit requirements depend on water temperature measured on race morning - check closer to the event for confirmation. A secure transition area with bag storage will be provided at Dening Park. Only athletes and officials are permitted in transition during the event, ensuring your equipment remains safe whilst you're racing.
Can I use a mountain bike and do I need a helmet?
Yes, mountain bikes are permitted in the event, though road or triathlon bikes are recommended for best performance. Australian Standards approved helmets are mandatory for all cycling legs - no helmet means no race. Helmets must be fastened before mounting your bike and remain on until you've racked your bike in transition.
