About This Event
The kunanyi Mountain Run (kMR) is a spectacular trail running event on kunanyi/Mt Wellington in Hobart, presented by Salomon. Offering distances from Vertical Kilometre to 66km Ultra with 4,000m elevation gain, runners experience steep technical tracks and alpine terrain on this sacred mountain generously shared by Palawa people.
Course Description
The kunanyi Mountain Run showcases the spectacular diversity of Tasmania's iconic mountain on Hobart's doorstep. Courses range from the unique 9km Vertical Downhill that plummets 1,150m, to the epic 66km Ultra Solo with a massive 3,780m elevation gain across technical alpine terrain. The legendary 25km Mountain Run loop offers 1,560m of climbing through varied landscapes, whilst the Alpine Marathon (46km) takes runners where their feet meet the sky. Sunday's Foothills courses (5km, 9km, 14km) provide more accessible options on lower slopes, with the 14km incorporating the Australian Athletics Mountain Running Championships. All routes celebrate kunanyi's rich cultural significance to Palawa people, featuring steep technical tracks, alpine sections, and breathtaking views across nipaluna/Hobart.
Quick Facts
Getting There
The event is based at Wellesley Park in South Hobart, easily accessible from Hobart CBD (5km south). Free street parking is available around Wellesley Park and surrounding South Hobart streets, though spaces fill quickly on event days. Consider carpooling or arriving early. Metro Tasmania buses service South Hobart from the city. Different race distances have varying start locations on the mountain, with shuttle buses provided for courses starting at the summit. Arrive at least 60-90 minutes before your scheduled start time to allow for registration, gear checks, and shuttle transfers.
Weather & What to Pack
Late March in Hobart brings autumn conditions with pleasant temperatures typically ranging from 11-20°C in the city, though mountain temperatures can be significantly cooler, especially at the summit where it may drop to 5-10°C. Weather on kunanyi is notoriously changeable - conditions can shift rapidly from sunshine to wind, rain, or even snow at higher elevations. Pack layers including waterproof jacket and warm clothing for longer courses. UV levels remain moderate so apply sunscreen. Stay well-hydrated despite the cooler conditions, particularly on the demanding ultra and marathon distances with substantial elevation gain.
Frequently Asked Questions
What mandatory gear do I need to carry?
Mandatory gear varies by distance. Ultra and marathon distances require comprehensive safety equipment including waterproof jacket, emergency blanket, first aid kit, headtorch, and nutrition. Shorter distances have reduced requirements. Check the official mandatory gear list on the website specific to your chosen distance.
Is this event suitable for first-time trail runners?
Yes! The Foothills courses (5km, 9km, 14km) on Sunday are excellent introductions to trail running with moderate elevation gains. The Kids Runs welcome young participants aged 5-14. However, the mountain courses (25km+) and Ultra distances are technical and demanding, best suited to experienced trail runners with mountain running experience.
Can I enter as a relay team?
Yes, the 66km Ultra Relay allows teams of up to 6 runners to tackle the full ultra course across 6 legs ranging from 7-12km each. This is a great way to experience the full mountain traverse with friends whilst sharing the massive 3,780m elevation challenge.
What's included in my registration?
Entry includes race participation, timing chip, finisher's medal, post-race refreshments, and access to the three-day trail festival atmosphere. Ultra and longer distance entries include aid stations with nutrition and hydration. Participants also receive a commemorative race item. See the Registration Inclusions page for full details.
Are there cut-off times for the longer distances?
Yes, all distances have cut-off times to ensure runner safety and allow course clearing before dark. Ultra Solo and Marathon have intermediate cut-offs at various checkpoints. Specific times are published in the race information guide closer to the event. Train appropriately for your chosen distance to ensure you can complete within cut-offs.
