Course Description

The Otway Trail Run follows the spectacular Old Beechy Rail Trail through the stunning Otway Ranges. The 16km course begins at Barongarook, descending through cool temperate rainforest to Birnam Station (6.3km mark). After conquering one steep hill climb, runners traverse undulating bushland and pastoral landscape to Kawarren. The 6.3km course starts at Kawarren, offering a shorter but equally scenic journey. Both courses finish at Rex Norman Park in the charming village of Gellibrand. This non-technical trail is perfect for beginners whilst still providing a rewarding challenge for experienced runners. Drink stations are positioned at approximately 5km and 10km along the 16km route, with water available at all start lines.

Getting There

Gellibrand is located 150km west of Melbourne via the Princes Highway, approximately one hour from Geelong. From Colac, turn left onto Colac Lavers Hill Road. For the 16km start, turn left onto Barongarook Road to Barongarook Tennis Club (20 minutes from Colac). For the 6.3km start, continue to Kawarren. Parking is available at all locations. Free shuttle buses operate between Colac, start lines, and Gellibrand (times to be confirmed). Arrive at least one hour before your start time to collect race bibs if registering after 27 February.

Weather & What to Pack

March in the Otway Ranges typically brings mild autumn conditions with temperatures ranging from 12-22°C. The dense forest canopy provides natural shade, keeping temperatures pleasant during the run. Morning conditions can be cool and misty, so wear layers you can remove. The region experiences moderate humidity and occasional rain - pack a light rain jacket just in case. The shaded trail terrain stays relatively cool, but hydration remains essential. Sun protection is recommended for exposed pastoral sections. The temperate rainforest environment creates ideal running conditions with fresh, crisp air.
