About This Event
I'm Still Standing Sydney is a Last One Standing ultra race where competitors consecutively run a 6.71km course on the hour, every hour until there is only one person left standing. The backyard ultra format brings mental and physical testing to Sydney suburbs with a mixture of path and grass course.
Course Description
I'm Still Standing Sydney brings the challenging backyard ultra format to Heffron Park in Maroubra's Eastern Suburbs. Competitors run a 6.71km loop on the hour, every hour, until only one runner remains. The course combines sealed pathways and grass sections through the park, offering a mix of surfaces that test both physical endurance and mental resilience. With 150 runners starting at 7am, this last one standing format creates a unique atmosphere of camaraderie and competition. The repetitive nature of the course allows runners to develop rhythm and strategy, whilst the hourly start creates mounting pressure as fatigue sets in. This is ultra running stripped to its essence - endurance, determination, and the will to keep going.

As this is a last one standing event that may extend into the evening or beyond, prepare for changing conditions. Hydration is critical - ensure you refuel adequately between each hourly loop.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a last one standing format?
In a last one standing (backyard ultra), runners complete a 6.71km loop every hour on the hour. You must finish within the hour and return for the next loop. The race continues until only one runner completes a loop that no other runner finishes - they are the winner. There is no set finish time; you run until you can't continue.
How do I prepare for this event?
This format requires significant ultra running experience. Train for back-to-back runs with minimal rest, practice eating and recovering in short windows, and build mental resilience for repetitive loops. Consider attempting smaller backyard ultra events first. Develop a pacing strategy that you can sustain for many hours.
What should I bring?
Set up a personal aid station area with nutrition, hydration, clothing layers, headtorch, spare shoes, and any medications. Bring supplies for potentially 24+ hours of running. A chair or mat for resting between loops is essential. Weather-appropriate gear for day and night running is critical.
Can I have a crew or support?
Yes, having crew support is highly recommended for backyard ultras. Your crew can help you refuel, change gear, and provide mental support during the brief rest periods between loops. Check the official event page for specific crew area guidelines and restrictions.
How long does the event typically last?
This varies greatly depending on the field. Backyard ultras can last anywhere from 12 hours to over 48 hours. The current world record exceeds 100 hours. Come prepared for a long event and have contingency plans for overnight running and extended participation.
