Course Description

This 10km out-and-back course runs entirely on footpaths through the scenic coastal suburbs of Clifton Beach and Palm Cove in tropical North Queensland. Starting from the beach at Deadman's Gully in Clifton Beach, the route follows the coastal pathway northward to Palm Cove, where runners reach the turnaround point at the iconic Palm Cove jetty. A water station awaits at this scenic halfway mark before you retrace your steps back to Deadman's Gully. The flat, sealed pathway makes this an accessible course for runners and walkers of all abilities, with the added bonus of a stunning beachside setting and refreshing evening start time to beat the tropical heat.

Getting There

Deadman's Gully Park is located on the beachfront in Clifton Beach, approximately 25km north of Cairns CBD. Drive north on Captain Cook Highway and look for parking along the Clifton Beach foreshore or nearby streets. Public parking is available near the start/finish area. Toilets are available at the venue. Aim to arrive 20-30 minutes before the 6pm start to collect your race bib and prepare for the race. Entries close 6pm the night before, with no race-day registration available.

Weather & What to Pack

January in Clifton Beach brings tropical summer conditions with warm, humid weather and afternoon temperatures ranging from 24-31°C. The 6pm evening start helps avoid the peak heat of the day, but expect high humidity levels typical of North Queensland's wet season. Afternoon storms are common during January, so check the weather forecast beforehand. Wear lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing and bring electrolyte drinks for hydration. The water stop at Palm Cove jetty provides essential refreshment at the halfway point. Sunscreen is recommended even for the evening start, and a post-race swim at the beach is the perfect cool-down.
