Course Description

The legendary Bogong to Hotham Rooftop Run traverses the spectacular Victorian High Country in a point-to-point alpine adventure. Starting at Mountain Creek Campground, the 64km route conquers Victoria's highest peak, Mt Bogong, before descending T-Spur to Big River. Runners then tackle Duane's Spur to reach the pristine Bogong High Plains, passing through Langford Gap aid station. The course continues across expansive alpine meadows before dropping to the Cobungra River and climbing the demanding Swindler's Spur to finish at Mt Hotham summit. The 35km option starts at Langford Gap, whilst the 29km begins at the same location and finishes there. This unmarked wilderness course requires navigation skills, map reading ability, and tracker app usage, making it one of Australia's toughest and most rewarding mountain ultras.

Getting There

The start line at Mountain Creek Campground is 10-15 minutes from Tawonga, 15-20 minutes from Tawonga South, and 20-25 minutes from Mt Beauty. Limited parking is available at the start—carpooling from Mt Beauty or Tawonga is strongly encouraged. Bus transport is provided from Falls Creek Coach depot (233 Kiewa Valley Highway, Tawonga South) to the 29km start at 10:30am sharp, and from Mt Hotham finish line back to Mt Beauty for 64km and 29km runners. Purchase a ticket that includes bus transport to access this service.

Weather & What to Pack

Mid-January in the Victorian Alps typically brings warm summer days with cool alpine conditions at altitude. Temperatures at the start can range from 15-25°C in the valley, dropping to 10-18°C on the high plains and summit. However, alpine weather is notoriously unpredictable—conditions can change rapidly with potential for wind, rain, or even cold snaps. Strong sun exposure is likely on exposed ridges and plains. Bring sun protection, layers for temperature variation, and weatherproof gear as per mandatory equipment list. Start early (5am for 64km/35km) to maximise daylight hours and avoid afternoon heat on lower sections.

Frequently Asked Questions

What experience do I need to enter the 64km or 35km?

Both distances require trail running experience, proven ultra endurance, and competitive pace demonstrated through suitable race results. The race assesses entrants on trail experience, endurance capacity, and speed. You'll also need navigation skills as the course is unmarked. If unsure about your readiness, contact the organisers at 0418 557 052 to discuss which distance suits your experience level.

What mandatory gear do I need to carry?

All runners must carry mandatory safety equipment listed on the official website and have a mobile phone with the Tracker App configured (instructions provided for iPhone and Android). The course is unmarked and traverses remote alpine terrain, so navigation equipment, emergency supplies, and appropriate clothing are essential. Check the Mandatory Gear section on the website for the complete list.

What are the time limits?

New time limits for 2026 are 15 hours for 64km (5am-8pm), 8 hours for 35km (5am-1pm), and 8 hours for 29km (12pm-8pm). Traditional limits were 12 hours for 64km and 6 hours for 35km, but extended limits now provide more flexibility for completing this challenging course.

Where should I stay and how do I get to the start?

Accommodation options include Tawonga (10-15 mins to start), Tawonga South (15-20 mins), and Mt Beauty (20-25 mins). Towonga Tourist Park is highly recommended. Mountain Creek Campground has very limited camping with only pit toilets and creek water. There's no bus to the start—you'll need to drive or carpool due to limited parking.

Does my entry support a charity?

Yes! Trailsplus donates $1 per participant to CanTeen, the Australian organisation supporting young people living with cancer. The organisation has now surpassed $80,000 in total donations. Runners can also make optional $5 online donations when registering.
