Course Description
The Wooters Watagans Not-a-Race takes runners through the stunning Watagans State Forest, starting from Mount Sugarloaf. The course features challenging trail terrain with significant elevation changes, including sections along Mt Faulk Road, Wakefield RFS routes, and Heaton climbs. Runners navigate through native bushland with multiple checkpoints providing support along the way. The 60km route extends to the bottom of Mt Faulk Road, whilst the 40km includes a section up Heaton before returning to Sugarloaf. The 20km option offers a taste of the terrain with an out-and-return to Checkpoint 1. With well-marked trails and multiple aid stations, this training event perfectly simulates race conditions for ultra-distance runners preparing for major events like UTA.

Weather & What to Pack
April in the NSW Hunter Valley region typically sees mild autumn conditions with daytime temperatures ranging from 14-24°C. Early morning starts can be cool (8-12°C), so dress in layers you can shed as temperatures rise. The forested trails provide shade but can be humid. Morning dew may create slippery conditions on technical sections. Pack a light rain jacket as April can bring occasional showers. With distances up to 60km and significant time on course, sun protection and adequate hydration are essential, especially for afternoon finishers.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a 'Not-a-Race' training event?
This is a supported training run designed to emulate race conditions, perfect for testing gear, nutrition plans, and getting in a long run before major ultra events like UTA. While timed for your reference, it's focused on training rather than competition.
Will there be aid stations and support?
Yes, volunteers and first aid personnel will be stationed at Checkpoint 1 (10km) and Checkpoint 2 (23km/Servo), providing water taps similar to UTA, Coke (BYO soft cup), lollies, and fruit. The course is also signposted at major turns.
Do I need to be a Wooters Runners member?
No, non-members can participate. Members pay $20 (early bird), whilst non-members pay $35, which includes club membership equivalent to cover insurance costs. Fees increase to $40/$55 two weeks before the event.
What should I bring on the day?
Bring your own hydration system, nutrition, trail running shoes suitable for technical terrain, weather-appropriate clothing, and a soft cup for Coke at checkpoints. Download the offline map using Avenza PDF Map app for navigation assistance.
Can I volunteer instead of running?
Absolutely! The event relies on volunteers for checkpoint coordination, timekeeping, first aid, course marshalling, and sign setup/collection. Register as a volunteer and indicate your preferred role and available times.
