Event Details
Course Description
Since 1959, the Great Pyramid Race has sent runners from Norman Park in Gordonvale out along Mill Street and the old Bruce Highway bridge to Walsh's Pyramid, a granite peak rising 922 metres above the cane fields. The flagship 12km race climbs to the summit through dense vegetation and exposed rock before a steep, controlled descent back down; the Half Pyramid Race turns at the halfway rock, and the Race to the Base turns at the mountain's foot. Shorter events - the 3km Cross Country, 1800m Juniors Race and the untimed Charity Fun Run - stay on the flat roads around town, while five Dash for Cash sprints add a 100m cash prize dash for spectators. SES volunteers mark runners off at checkpoints on every mountain event.
Getting There
All seven events start and finish at Norman Park in the centre of Gordonvale, a town on the Bruce Highway south of Cairns. Runner check-in and bib collection is at the registration tent at Norman Park on the Friday and Saturday before racing. The park also hosts market stalls, food and family activities for the up to 5,000 spectators who attend each year, so arrive in good time before your race's check-in window closes.
Weather & What to Pack
Early August falls in the dry season for tropical Far North Queensland, and while nights in Gordonvale can be cool, race organisers warn that daytime temperatures on race day can still exceed 30°C with high humidity. Rain is uncommon at this time of year but the exposed granite of Walsh's Pyramid offers little shade on the climb. A hydration backpack is compulsory for the Great Pyramid and Half Pyramid Races because of the heat and exertion involved, and organisers advise runners to consider their fitness and health carefully before racing in these conditions.
