Course Description

Wandi Cross is pure mountain running at its finest, set in the picturesque Wandiligong valley near Bright. The courses summit both Mystic Mountain and Goldmine Ridge, featuring steep ascents, technical descents, and the infamous 'Goat Track' - a relentless 500m climb over just 1.3km with hands-on-ground scrambling. Runners navigate rocky escarpments, fern-lined spurs, flowing single track through native forest, and panoramic high country views. From the family-friendly Kids Run along creek-side trails to the brutal WC Xtreme with 2437m of elevation gain across 26.3km, each distance tests endurance, strength, and cross-trail ability on raw, natural terrain. All profits support Wandiligong Primary School.

Getting There

Wandiligong is located just minutes from Bright in Victoria's Alpine region, approximately 3 hours from Melbourne via the Great Alpine Road. The WC Summit and Kids Run start at Wandiligong Oval, while the Traverse and Xtreme begin at Alpine Park. Parking is available at both venues. Plan to arrive at least 45 minutes before your start time for registration and gear check. The alpine location is remote, so ensure you have fuel and supplies before departing Bright.

Weather & What to Pack

May in Victoria's High Country brings crisp autumn conditions with average temperatures ranging from 4°C to 14°C. Mountain weather can change rapidly - expect cold starts with potential for sunshine, cloud cover, or even light rain. The elevation gain means temperatures will drop significantly on ridge lines and summits. Pack warm layers including thermals and gloves (recommended for all distances). A windproof jacket is mandatory for all races. Despite the cooler temperatures, hydration remains crucial on steep climbs. Early morning starts mean frosty conditions are likely.

Frequently Asked Questions

What gear is mandatory for Wandi Cross?

Wind jacket, technical running footwear, and water cup/hydration flask are mandatory for all distances (footwear recommended but not mandatory for Kids Run). Warm clothing, thermals, and gloves are strongly recommended. This is an alpine mountain race with rapidly changing weather conditions.

Are there cutoff times?

Yes. WC Traverse: 11:00 AM at Alpine Park checkpoint. WC Xtreme: 11:30 AM at Alpine Park AND 2:30 PM at Mystic checkpoint (25km). Runners who don't meet cutoffs must stop for safety reasons. No cutoffs for Summit or Kids Run.

What level of experience do I need?

WC Xtreme and Traverse require competency in moving over mountains on technical terrain with steep ascents and descents. WC Summit is perfect for first-time mountain runners and kids 6+ (under 10s must run with parent/guardian). Minimum age for Traverse is 12, and Xtreme is 16.

Is this a timed event?

Yes, Wandi Cross is officially timed by race organisers, though it's designed as a 'technology-free run' encouraging you to leave personal devices behind and focus on the pure mountain running experience. Results are recorded and available to all participants.

Where are aid stations located?

WC Summit has 1 aid station (at Mystic summit), Traverse has 2, and Xtreme has 4 strategically placed checkpoints. All required aid is provided on course. Support crews may only assist runners within designated checkpoint areas (Start/Finish zones).
