Starting from Kev Bannah Oval in Julia Creek, this unique course incorporates authentic outback-style obstacles designed to keep you laughing to the finish line. All obstacles are optional - the organisers call it 'challenge by choice', meaning you can climb, crawl, jump over, or simply run around them. The Dusty Kids Challenge covers approximately 2km, whilst the adult courses run 5km laps that take around 45 minutes each. The terrain combines dirt trails with entertaining obstacles set against the quintessential outback landscape. With prize money up for grabs and a festival atmosphere, this is adventure running at its most memorable.

Getting There

Kev Bannah Oval is located on Julia Street in Julia Creek, adjacent to the Julia Creek Combined Sporting Association Building (corner Julia and Shaw Streets). Julia Creek is in northwest Queensland, approximately 630km west of Townsville via the Flinders Highway. Limited public transport serves the area, so driving is recommended. Race pack collection is mandatory between 12pm-3pm Friday at Dirt n Dust Central (84 Burke Street). Arrive early Saturday morning for the 7:35am start.

Weather & What to Pack

Julia Creek in mid-April experiences warm to hot outback weather. Expect daytime temperatures ranging from 25-33°C with low humidity and clear skies. Morning races benefit from cooler conditions (15-20°C at start time). The outback sun is intense, so bring sunscreen, sunglasses and a cap. Hydration is critical - drink well before, during and after your run. The 'dusty' course name is accurate, so be prepared for dry, dusty conditions. Evening temperatures are pleasant for the Friday kids' race.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the obstacles compulsory?

No! The organisers use a 'challenge by choice' approach. You can climb over, crawl under, jump through or simply run around any obstacle. Everyone is encouraged to give them a go for the fun experience.

When and where do I collect my race pack?

Race pack collection is mandatory between 12pm-3pm on Friday, 17th April at Dirt n Dust Central, 84 Burke Street. If you cannot collect during these times, contact the race organisers beforehand. No collection means no race entry.

Is there prize money?

Yes! Prize money is awarded across all distances. The 15km offers $225/$150/$75 for 1st/2nd/3rd, whilst the Dusty Kids Challenge awards $90/$60/$30. There's also a Best Dressed Group prize sponsored by Draft & Co.

What age groups can compete?

The Dusty Kids Challenge is for ages 5-10. The 5km is available for kids (11-13), youth (14-17) and adults (18+). The 10km and 15km courses are adults only (18+) and are competitive timed events.

How long does each lap take?

The organisers estimate approximately 45 minutes per 5km lap, though this varies based on fitness level and how many obstacles you tackle. The 2km kids' course is shorter and designed for younger participants.
