Course Description

The North Queensland Cross Country Championships takes place at the Whitsunday Regional Sports Precinct in Cannon Valley, featuring purpose-built courses with a mixture of surfaces, elevations, bends and long straights. Runners tackle lapped courses of 1km, 2km and 3km depending on their event, with the open 10km race consisting of four laps combining the longer circuits. The venue is situated halfway between Proserpine and Airlie Beach, offering spectacular tropical scenery and multiple vantage points for spectators to cheer on competitors. The courses are designed to test all abilities whilst remaining accessible for junior runners aged from 4 years up to masters and open competitors. Access to the precinct is via Plemenuk Road just before Mount Marlow when travelling from Proserpine.

Getting There

The Whitsunday Regional Sports Precinct is located in Cannon Valley, accessed via Plemenuk Road just before Mount Marlow when travelling from Proserpine towards Airlie Beach. The venue is approximately halfway between Proserpine (20km) and Airlie Beach (15km), easily reached via the main Shute Harbour Road. The region is serviced by three airports: Proserpine-Whitsunday Coast, Hamilton Island and Mackay, with daily flights from major cities. Parking is available at the sports precinct. Arrive early for bib collection and course familiarisation.

April in the Whitsundays offers ideal racing conditions with warm tropical weather. Expect temperatures between 20-28°C with moderate humidity levels as the wet season transitions to the dry. Morning starts will be cooler and more comfortable for racing, with temperatures rising through the morning. The region typically enjoys plenty of sunshine with occasional showers possible. Bring sun protection including hat, sunscreen and sunglasses. Stay well hydrated before and during your race, and consider light, breathable running clothing suitable for warm, humid conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age categories are available?

The championships cater for all ages from 4 to 100+ years, with separate races for juniors (6 and under through to 18 and under), open categories (20 and under), and masters divisions (30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+). Age categories are determined by your age on the day of the event.

When can I collect my race bib?

Registration and bib collection is available on Saturday 11 April 2026 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Whitsunday Regional Sports Precinct. This is also an opportunity for course familiarisation between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM.

Can I compete as part of a club or individually?

All competitors aged 4 to 100 years are welcome to compete either as individuals or representing their athletics club. There's also a 6km relay option for teams of three members with at least one female, where each member runs one 2km lap.

What should I bring on race day?

Bring your running shoes suitable for mixed terrain, comfortable athletic clothing, sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses), and water bottle. The course features a mixture of surfaces including some elevation changes, so trail or cross-country spikes may be beneficial for competitive runners.

Are there presentations and what time do they start?

Yes, presentations will be held at 11:30 AM on Sunday 12 April 2026 following the completion of all races. Awards will recognise achievements across the various age categories and distances.
