Course Description

The Peter Lahiff Around the Hill course takes runners on a scenic loop around Castle Hill, one of Townsville's most iconic landmarks. Starting from Kennedy Street in North Ward, the course winds through tropical North Queensland's coastal scenery with views across Cleveland Bay and Magnetic Island. The 12km route offers a moderately challenging run with some undulating terrain as you circle the base of the monolithic pink granite formation. The 5km option provides a shorter alternative on the same course. Both routes showcase Townsville's natural beauty, combining waterfront paths and residential streets in this heritage-listed area. The early start helps runners beat the tropical heat while enjoying the morning sea breeze.

Weather & What to Pack

Late May marks the transition into Townsville's dry season, offering ideal running conditions. Expect mild morning temperatures around 18-22°C at the 6:00 AM start, warming to 25-28°C by mid-morning. Humidity levels are typically moderate (60-70%), much lower than the summer months. Clear skies and minimal rainfall are common for this time of year. Wear lightweight, breathable running gear and bring a cap for sun protection. While cooler than summer, tropical Queensland sunshine is still strong, so apply sunscreen. Hydration is essential—take advantage of water stations and consider carrying your own bottle.
