Getting There

Eungella National Park is located approximately 80km west of Mackay via the Peak Downs Highway and Eungella Road. The race start is at the corner of Eungella Dam Road and Hazelwood Roads in Crediton. From Mackay, allow 1.5 hours driving time through the scenic Pioneer Valley. Parking is available at the venue. Public transport is not available to this remote location. Arrive by 6:30 AM to allow time for registration, warm-up, and pre-race briefing.

Weather & What to Pack

Late May in the Eungella highlands brings cooler, comfortable conditions ideal for trail running. Expect morning temperatures between 12-18°C, with potential for light mist in the rainforest canopy. The higher elevation makes it cooler than coastal Mackay, and the dense rainforest provides natural shade. Pack layers as temperatures can vary between exposed and forested sections. The region can be humid, so moisture-wicking clothing is recommended. Rain is possible year-round in this rainforest environment, so consider trail shoes with good grip and potentially a light waterproof layer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this suitable for my first trail run?

The 5km distance is perfect for trail running beginners, offering manageable elevation and a taste of rainforest running. The 11km and 18km Challenge require previous trail experience and comfort with significant elevation gain and technical terrain.

What's included in my entry?

Entry includes athlete photos, personal accident insurance, finisher's medal (distances vary), and timing services. This is event #3 of the 5-event Off the Beaten Track Trail Run Series organised by Tri-ActiV8.

What should I bring on race day?

Essential items include trail running shoes with good grip, hydration (hydration vest or handheld recommended for 11km and 18km), energy gels or snacks for longer distances, and layers for varying temperatures. Consider gaiters to keep debris out of shoes on technical sections.

Are there aid stations on the course?

Check the official website for aid station locations and what's provided. For the 18km Challenge, carrying your own hydration and nutrition is highly recommended due to the remote rainforest setting.

Can I spectate or is there support for non-runners?

Eungella National Park offers beautiful walking tracks and lookouts for spectators. The remote location means limited facilities, so plan accordingly. The area is renowned for platypus viewing at Broken River, making it worth a visit for supporters.
