About This Event

An ideal beginners trail run or a whole heap of fun for the more experienced trail runner. Showcases stunning Tasmanian waterfalls and towering trees along a mostly accessible 6.2km path through Russell Falls in Mt Field National Park. Part of the Tasmanian Trail Running Series. Start time 10:00am.

Course Description

The Russell Falls Trail Run is a stunning 6.2km loop through the heart of Mt Field National Park, showcasing some of Tasmania's most spectacular natural features. The track winds past the iconic Russell Falls and other beautiful waterfalls, surrounded by towering mountain ash and swamp gum trees, some of Tasmania's tallest. The trail is exceptionally well-constructed and maintained, nearly wheelchair-accessible in sections, making it ideal for beginners. However, runners will tackle two long flights of stairs as the anticlockwise route climbs upward through both ascents. The combination of accessible trails and challenging stairs creates a perfect balance for first-timers whilst keeping experienced trail runners entertained with varied terrain and breathtaking scenery.

Getting There

The race starts at Mt Field National Park, approximately 80km northwest of Hobart via the Lyell Highway. After entering the park, turn right immediately after crossing the Tyenna River bridge and look for event flags near the day shelter and picnic areas close to the visitors centre. Ample parking is available around the picnic areas. Arrive by 8:30 AM for registration, with the briefing at 9:45 AM. Note that national park entry fees may apply.

Weather & What to Pack

Late August in Tasmania brings winter conditions with cool to cold temperatures. Expect daytime temperatures between 5-12°C, with potential for frost in the morning. The national park's elevation means conditions can be cooler and wetter than Hobart. Pack layers including a windproof jacket, as mountain weather can change quickly. The trail can be muddy and slippery after rain, particularly on stairs and around waterfalls. While it's winter, precipitation is moderate, so waterproof gear is recommended. The cooler temperatures are ideal for trail running, reducing overheating risks on the climbs.
