Course Description

Starting at the historic Grand Hotel Many Peaks on Gladstone Monto Road, the Boyne Valley 50 follows the Dawes Range section of the Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail. The 50km ultra is an out‑and‑back loop to Barrimoon siding, taking runners through rolling hills, historic railway tunnels and lush forested sections. The 23km Uphill climbs from Many Peaks to Barrimoon, while the 23km Downhill starts at the tunnels and returns on a gentle descent. The 12km Taster covers a 6km out‑and‑back before turning around. Aid stations at Golembil and Barrimoon provide water, fruit and hydration, and shuttle buses transport 23km participants between the start and finish. The trail offers a mix of gentle grades and challenging climbs, showcasing the rugged beauty of the Boyne Valley.

Getting There

The race starts and finishes at the Grand Hotel Many Peaks on Gladstone Monto Road, about a 1‑hour‑15‑minute drive north of Gladstone. Parking is available along the main road; follow local signage and avoid private property. The road to Many Peaks is tight and partially unsealed, so drive carefully. For detailed transport options, shuttle schedules and parking rules, visit the official event website.

Weather & What to Pack

In July the Boyne Valley experiences winter weather, with daytime highs usually ranging from 16 °C to 20 °C (60‑68 °F) and night temperatures dropping to 5 °C‑9 °C (41‑48 °F). Expect clear skies with occasional light rain and low humidity. Runners should dress in breathable layers, bring a wind‑proof jacket and warm hat or gloves for early‑morning starts, and stay hydrated despite cooler temperatures. Sun protection is still advisable, as UV can be strong even in winter.

What are the age requirements for each distance?

The 50km and 23km Uphill races require participants to be at least 18 years old. The 23km Downhill is open to runners 16 years and older (under‑18 must be supervised). The 12km Taster allows entrants from 13 years old (under‑16 must be supervised).

What are the cut‑off times for the races?

The 50km ultra has an 8‑hour cut‑off, the 23km Uphill and Downhill each have a 4‑hour cut‑off, and the 12km Taster must be completed within 2.5 hours. These times are strictly enforced to keep the event schedule on track.
