Course Description

Experience the extraordinary running along Whitehaven Beach's world-renowned pristine white silica sands. This iconic course takes you across one of Australia's most photographed beaches, with the azure waters of the Whitsundays providing a stunning backdrop. The firm, white sand creates a unique running surface that's both challenging and exhilarating. Half marathon runners will complete multiple laps of this spectacular coastline, whilst 10km and 5km participants enjoy shorter but equally breathtaking distances. The flat beach terrain is deceptively demanding, requiring different muscle engagement than traditional road running. Junior distances offer young runners an unforgettable introduction to beach racing. Limited entry numbers ensure the pristine environment remains protected whilst providing participants with an exclusive racing experience on one of the world's most beautiful beaches.

Getting There

Whitehaven Beach is accessible only by boat. All registered participants receive ferry transfers from Hamilton Island as part of their entry fee. Participants will need to travel to Hamilton Island Marina beforehand - accessible via domestic flights to Hamilton Island Airport or ferry from Airlie Beach on the mainland. Detailed transfer schedules and meeting points will be provided closer to the event. Plan to arrive at Hamilton Island the day before, as accommodation fills quickly. Check the event website for specific ferry departure times.

Weather & What to Pack

Late May marks the beginning of Queensland's dry season in the Whitsundays, offering ideal racing conditions. Expect pleasant temperatures ranging from 17-24°C, with low humidity and minimal rainfall. The tropical location means strong UV levels even in cooler months, so sun protection is essential. Morning start times capitalise on cooler temperatures and calmer conditions. The island microclimate can bring gentle breezes that provide welcome relief on the exposed beach. Wear light, breathable running gear, apply sunscreen liberally, and hydrate well before the race. The white sand reflects heat, so consider a cap or visor.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Whitehaven Beach on race day?

Ferry transfers from Hamilton Island Marina are included in your registration fee. Detailed schedules and meeting points will be emailed to registered participants closer to the event date. You'll need to arrange your own travel to Hamilton Island beforehand.

What's it like running on Whitehaven Beach's sand?

The famous white silica sand is firmer than typical beach sand, but still more challenging than road running. It engages different muscle groups, particularly calves and stabilisers. We recommend training on sand surfaces beforehand if possible, and wearing lightweight racing shoes or trainers.

Can I bring my family to watch?

Absolutely! The junior distances are specifically designed for family participation. Spectators are welcome, though they'll need to arrange their own ferry access to Whitehaven Beach. Contact Hamilton Island Events for spectator boat transfer options.

When should I register?

Register as early as possible - this event has reached capacity before closing date in previous years due to environmental limits on beach access and ferry capacity. Early registration ensures your spot in this unique race experience.

What facilities are available on Whitehaven Beach?

As a protected natural environment, facilities are limited. Basic amenities will be provided at the race site. Water stations will be positioned on course. Bring essentials in a small bag, but remember to take everything with you when you leave to preserve this pristine location.
