Course Description
The Southern Rail Trail Running Festival follows the historic Great Southern Railway path, offering runners a spectacular journey through South Gippsland's diverse landscapes. The trail winds through lush forests, rolling farmland, and charming country towns, with stunning views of Wilsons Promontory in the distance. A standout feature is the series of restored trestle bridges that provide breathtaking vantage points across the surrounding countryside. The flat, well-maintained rail trail surface makes it ideal for ultra-distance running, combining natural beauty with historical heritage. The Half Marathon starts through the iconic Stoney Creek Races gates, adding a unique touch to the experience. Between settlements, runners enjoy peaceful solitude with only birdsong and footsteps for company.
Quick Facts
Getting There
Port Welshpool is located approximately 90 minutes south-east of Melbourne via the South Gippsland Highway. Follow signs to Port Welshpool once you reach the South Gippsland region. Parking details will be provided closer to the event date. Public transport options are limited in this rural area, so driving or carpooling is recommended. Arrive at least 45-60 minutes before your scheduled start time for registration, gear check, and warm-up.
Weather & What to Pack
Late May in South Gippsland brings cool autumn conditions with average temperatures ranging from 8-15°C. Expect crisp mornings that may start around 5-8°C, warming slightly throughout the day. The coastal location can bring unpredictable weather including wind, rain, or sunshine. Dress in layers with moisture-wicking base layers and a lightweight waterproof jacket. The longer ultra distances will span varied conditions, so pack extra clothing options. Stay well-hydrated despite cooler temperatures, as ultra-distance efforts still require consistent fluid intake.
