About This Event

Adventure race for teams of two featuring trail running, mountain biking and kayaking with navigation. Classic course 4-6 hours, Novice course available. Kayaks provided, bike hire available. Start/finish at Audley in Royal National Park.

Course Description

The Sydney Max Adventure Race takes you through the spectacular Royal National Park, one of the world's oldest national parks. The Classic course challenges teams with steep climbs out of the valley, exhilarating descents on purpose-built mountain bike tracks, and kayaking on the scenic Hacking River. Expect approximately 15-25km of mountain biking including technical single track, 7-12km of trail running with elevation gain, and 2-4km of kayaking near the start/finish at Audley. The Novice course offers a more accessible introduction to adventure racing, featuring the iconic Honeymoon Steps climb, flowing single track descents, and a shorter paddle. Both courses require navigation skills using provided maps, with teams of two staying together throughout.

Weather & What to Pack

Late May in the Royal National Park typically brings mild autumn conditions with daytime temperatures ranging from 12-20°C. Mornings can be cool, especially in the shaded valley sections, with the possibility of light rain or mist. The kayaking leg on the Hacking River will be refreshing, so quick-dry clothing is recommended. Bring layers for the early start that you can shed as you warm up. Sun protection is essential as exposed ridgeline sections can be sunny. Pack a change of clothes for after the race and bring plenty of water for the 2-6 hour event.
